REAPING REWARDS WOMOUT Milky Way Farm Star Gallops Mile and a Quarter in 2:12. Arrival of War Admiral at Churchill Downs Delayed by Bad Weather Track Is" Slow. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 27. The delayed arrival of Glen Riddle Farms War Admiral, which, as a result of his Chesapeake Stakes victory, is challenging Pompoon for the post of favoritism for the 0,000 race here on May 8, gave the standard-bearers of Mrs. Ethel V. Mars, Reaping Reward and Mill-, tary, a chance to monopolize the spotlight at Churchill Downs, where a number of candidates are receiving their final preparation for the Kentucky Derby. War Admiral and also Townsend B. Martins Court Scandal and William Du Pont, Jr.s Fairy Hill, were to have left Maryland , Monday for this point, but their departure was postponed twenty-four hours because of a storm in the East and generally, bad , weather all along the route to Louisville. They now are expected here about noon ! Wednesday and their arrival is certain to stimulate keener interest in the morning training activities at the Derby scene. I Outsde of the Milky Way hopefuls, most! of the candidates which have been training here for the Blue Grass classic are generally considered as second flight prospects. HOLD SPOTLIGHT. With other Derby horses indulging In lighter exercise. Reaping Reward and Military had the spotlight to themselves this morning and, although the track was slow, the program outlined for them by trainer Robert McGarvey called for them to go the full Derby route of a mile and a quarter. Reaping Reward, the ace of the Milky Way band, traversed the distance in 2:12; Military in 2:12, and the stables Texas Derby winner. Mars Shield, which paced them the first mile, ran her eight furlongs in 1:42. In the long drill, their first over the Derby distance since arriving here from Texas, the Mars colts kept pace with their filly companion as the mile was covered in 1:42 and then proceeded to the mile and a furlong marker with Reaping Reward opening up an advantage over Military. The latters time for the nine furlongs was 1:58, while Reaping Reward was clocked in 1:57. Starting at the eighth post, the Chicago-owned trio began their trials wjth a quarter in :25. The second quarter, negotiated in :26, found them on even terms, and the alignment prevailed as they put three-quarters behind them in 1:16. As above related, the Milky Way performers were headed at the termination of eight furlongs where Mars Shield was under light pressure. As the two colts went on an additional quarter their riders, Alfred Robertson, on Reaping Reward, and Harry Hamilton, on Military, indulged them mildly. EXCELLENT PERFORMANCES. From every standpoint the Chicago- candidates accomplished excellent performances, j The track, slow and holding, was very deep 1 and the two colts were directed over courses well out from the rail. In addition, the weather was wet and raw, anything but desirable for training. Trainer McGarvey, expressing his satisfaction over the manner in which his horses are progressing, said that both had been extensively trained in the South before coming here and, in his own words, added, "none of those fast horses better be stopping in the Derby," implying that either Reaping Reward or Military, or both of them, would be doing plenty of running when speed meant the most. Revealing for the first time that he plans to start the two before the Derby, the Milky Way conditioner said: "We are going to start the two colts in the mile Derby Trial next Tuesday and we dont care who is in it with us." The only known Derby starter to work was No Sir, Miss Mary Hirschs runner-up to Court Scandal in the Flamingo Stakes and, like Reaping Reward, holder of a decision over Pompoon. With Miss Hirsch in Lexington on a business mission for her father, Max Hirsch, who saddled last years Derby winner. Bold Venture, No Sir worked under the direction of Jake Lowenstein and in company with a stable companion, Charmed Circle. WORKS EASILY. Pointing for the seven furlongs Indian HilU Purse here Saturday, the Hirsch three-year-old went an easy five furlongs, for which he was timed in 1:06, the quarter in :25 and the half mile in :52. Without exception, all other of the Derby hopefuls were on the track for lighter training. They included Mrs. W. H. Fursts Gerald, Waggoner Bros. Heelfly, I. J. Collins Bernard F., Maxwell Howards Sceneshifter and Fencing, Applegates Chigre and Raoul Walshs imported Sunset Trail II. The latter arrived here Sunday night from Tanforan. The elaborate preparations made for the arrival of War Admiral, Fairy Hill, and Court Scandal today are to be carried over until tomorrow and every precaution is to be taken to insure their care and comfort upon being unloaded and transferred to their barns at Churchill Downs. Contingent upon the stable of his employer, C. V. Whitney, not having a starter in the race, jockey Raymond "Sonny" Workman may be astride Military, one of Mrs. Ethel V. Mars entries in the Kentucky Derby here at Churchill Downs, May 8. OFFER WORKMAN MOUNT. Acting under instructions from Robert McGarvey, trainer of Mrs. Mars Milky Way Farm stable, jockey Alfred Robertson, the stables contract rider, today offered Workman the Derby mount Robertson will be in the saddle on Reaping Reward, generally regarded as the more formidable of the two Chicago colts. Although Workman has ranked among the countrys leading jockeys for a number of years, he never yet has piloted the winner of a Kentucky Derby. .,.,. The Whitney stables only possible starter In the Derby is Black Look, which, after a winning effort at Kceneland a short time ago, was beaten in a subsequent race at the same track. Black Look is a tentative starter in the Blue Grass Stakes at Kceneland, Thursday, and his showing in that event is expected to determine his Kentucky Derby status.
