TOLEDO NEAR WATER SHORTAGE TOLEDO, Ohio, Dec. 28 Two cities near the western end of Lake Erie today faced serious shortage of water because of the freezing winds from the west. In Toledo and Sandusky water consumption was curtailed as the wind lowered the levels of the normal supply. The Maumee River at Toledo was almost ten feet below normal, and only about 200,000 gallons an hour, or one-seventh the normal need, was being taken by the city filtration plants. At Sandusky the reservoirs contained enough water to last several hours, and a drop in wind velocity held promise of allowing water to flow back into Sandusky Bay from the lake. The Red Cross completed arrangements to rush tank cars of water into Toledo to meet the sudden water shortage.
