Apprentice Mike Pantone, who is at present serving a ten-day suspension for rough riding, will leave for Havana, Cuba, to ride for the remainder of the winter. The suspension of apprentice Hayden Dupuy expired with Wednesdays racing at the Fair Grounds and the Louisiana youngster expects to return to the saddle Thursday afternoon. Yearlings are required to break from the starting gate three times under the supervision of starter Johnny Morrissey before they will be permitted to start in races for two-year-olds, the first .of which is on schedule for January 3. Cecil Locklear has been engaged as the permanent trainer of the McDce Stable, replacing Joe Bernard, who formerly conditioned the horses owned by the partnership of McCamey and Deaner. Word was received from J. G. Angner that the eye operation that he recently underwent in Miami, Fla., proved successful and he hopes to return to New Orleans early next month to resume charge of the Leo M. Biggs horses. Starter Robert Frend stopped off in New Orleans for a few hours Monday en route from Lufkin, Texas, to Miami, Fla., where he will remain for the balance of the winter. Frend has been engaged to do the starting at Gulfstream Park. Apprentice Ray Camp packed his tack and will leave for Havana, Cuba, where he will . join his contract employer, T. B. Miller, who j shipped his stable to Oriental Park, j All of the horses in the stable of Mrs. S. T. I Baxter are reported on the ailing list and it j will be some time before they will be ready to resume racing. Trainer Baxter has been i unable to prep his two yearlings for early campaigning. j Bob Warren left for Santa Anita, where he ! will join jockey Sammy Williams at the California track. Warren will make the riding engagements for the Texan, who finished third on the American jockey list this year. Clarence Davison added the four-year-old gelding Paulson, by Paul Bunyan Jenny Dear, to the band of horses he has in quarters at the Fair Grounds. Trainer F. D. McElroy of the N. L. Naylor stable returned from Houston, Texas, where he spent Christmas with Mrs. McElroy and I relatives.
