Preakness Week Opens at Old Pimlico Offer Oaks, Dixie On Fridays Card Eastern Turf Patrons Are Anxiously Awaiting Second Of Triple Crown Events PIMLICO, Baltimore. Md., May 3. — Preakness week once again comes to this historic Maryland Jockey Club course and racing enthusiasts of the Old Line State are looking forward with keen anticipation to the spirited mile and three -sixteenths test which will be staged next Saturday by the countrys most prominent three-year-olds. Besides attracting the majority of the Derby participants, Pimlico will also have in is line-up such good sophomores as E. P. Taylors Cornish Knight, Mill River Stables Secnav, Greentree Stables Blue Border and Wide Wing, and Cedar Farms Mityme. The second leg on the mythical "Triple Crown" for three-year-olds, the Preakness is annually one of the most interesting spectacles of the entire Maryland season, but the actual running of the Preakness will not sneak up on racegoers, for the host organization has six days of very interesting sport planned. Mondays card will feature the ,000 Pimlico Breeders Stakes, for two-year-olds, foaled in Maryland, while the following days will feature the Survivor Stakes, Jervis Spencer Steeplechase Handicap, Pimlico Spring Maiden Steeplechase Handicap, Pimlico Nursery I Stakes, with Fridays program co-featuring two rich events, the Pimlico Oaks and the Dixie Handicap. Assault Will Seek Dixie The Oaks, outstanding event of the Maryland spring season, drew 61 nominations, including the outstanding lassies in the country. Due to arrive here the first of the week from Churchill Downs is the Calumet Farm trio of Happiness, Jane Gail and Peppy Nell. Also considered probable starters are A. B. Hancock, Jr.s, Blue Grass, Circle M Ranchs Cosmic Missile and C. V. Whitneys Mother, the money horses in the recently-run Kentucky Oaks. Another probable participant is Ben Whit-akers Carolyn A., who has been racing extremely well all year, even against colts and geldings on occasions. The Dixie Handicap, which was to be the medium of a meeting of Assault, Armed and Stymie, has lost one and possibly two of that trio, but still shapes up as one of the best handicap events of the season for the distance performers. While Armed is definitely out of the race and Stymie is regarded as doubtful, officials of the Maryland Jockey Club have been advised that, barring mishap, Assault will fulfill his engagement in the 0,000 added event. Another regarded as a definite starter is Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Natchez, undefeated in two starts this year, having won the Harford Handicap and the Edward Burke. This Johnstown colt, in the opinion of many horsemen who have witnessed his races this spring, is on the verge of developing into one of the top members ol his division this year.
