Bel Air Launches 10-Day Meeting This Afternoon Purse Distribution to Average 2,000 Daily at Maryland Oval By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent BEL AIR, Md., May 20.— The Harford County Fair Association, operators of Bel Airs compact three-quarter mile race course, tomorrow launches a 10-day racing session which figures to establish new records in both attendance and wagering. Situated as it is between the close of Pim- lico and the opening of Delaware Park, this first stop on Marylands minor circuit is expected to attract thoroughbreds whose activity has heretofore been confined to tracks one mile or more in circumference. G. Ray Bryson, general manager of Bel Air, has instructed racing secretary J.-Fred Colwill to arrange programs which call for a 2,000 daily purse distribution. Top offering in this respect is the ,500 Decoration Day Handicap. Of the programs listed in the condition book, the smallest purse for a featured event is ,600, while the majority of the headliners are worth ,000 or more. In and sincere effort to furnish his patrons with the best possible competition, Bryson has also had installed at this course the film patrol, making Bel Air the first minor track in the East with such an innovation. Then, too, E. I. "Jim" Langford, mutuel manager, has arranged to have 15 daily double selling machines in use during the 10 day period, which gives Bel Air another "first" among the tracks of less than a mile. Featuring the opening-day program is the I ,500 Bel Air Inaugural, in which 11 horses have been entered to compete at the seven-furlong distance. Entered overnight are: Bee A. H., Dance Routine, Mr. Willie, Noras Bonnet, Weatherman, Golden Tempest, Swamp Rat, Persian Road, Jack Carey, Elsie M. and Blenwick. The latter is on the reserve list and will start only in event of a scratch from the original field.
