Tee Off in British Amateur Today Chapman Favored To Retain Crown Shoots 68 Practice Round; Play at Prestwick, Scotland Lures Forty-Two Americans By HENRY THORNBERRY United Press Sports Writer PRESTWICK, Scotland, May 24. Defending champion Dick Chapman of Pine-hurst, N. C, shot a practice round 68 today to establish himself as a firm favorite to retain his British Amateur golf championship in the tournament beginning Monday. Chapman, Frank Stranahan of Toledo, Ohio, and Harvey Ward of Chicago were the pre-tourney choices, even before todays round, but the North Carolina lad, playing today in a foursome with Bobby Knowles of Aiken, S. C, Scottish champion Morty Dykes and Henri Lemaze of France, moved to the top of the list. Ward didnt do so well in his practice round today. He quickly discovered the terrors of Prestwicks deadly first hole, which runs along a railroad line. He cut his first two tee shots out of bounds and took an eight for the hole. But he still finished with a 75, which is not bad for a first visit to this course. Billy Maxwell of Odessa, Texas, the American champion, has impressed observers in match play with his expert short game. But Chapman remained the choice.
