SuffolkDowns Memos 1 By FRED GALIANI J JDomquil Domquil Being Brought Up Slowly Gelding to Skip Yankee Handicap Not Ready for Distance Test Yet YetSUFFOLK SUFFOLK DOWNS East Boston Mass June 5 Although Domquil is generally considered to be one of the best threeyear olds in the area trainer Maurice Junior Bres nahan is content to go along slowly with the gelding and is passing up the 25000 mile and an eighth Yankee Handicap Not that he cant nahdle it says Junior I think he will be even better at a distance than at sprints but I havent ot him UD to that kind of a race yet Hes a hard horse to work before he ever started he was a will ¬ ing worker but once he was at the races he knew the difference and he wont give with his all Hell work with another horse but I havent got one in the barn that can keep up with him Domquil has only started nine times in his career and has brought back a check on each occasion So far this season he has been to the post three times finishing second once and winning the next two His last he won in l10Js after being turned sideways at the start and he beat Park Dandy in the heat Bresnahan his age belied by his gray hair came to the track via the hunts and show horse circuits He recalls riding at hunt meetings against Bobby Permane and per ¬ formed in steeplechases at the old Mount Royal track in Montreal riding against Judy Johnson in her very first race at a recognized course courseBresnahan Bresnahan served three and a half years in the war with the Mars Task Force in Burma a mule outfit that was responsible for securing the Burma Road Returning to civilian life he turned owner and trainer making the fair cir ¬ cuit and Fascoag His first horse was Uproarious who should have been named disasterous because he broke down be ¬ fore Bresnahan could get a return on him His next charge was Boonesboro who won enough to get Bresnahan going on the road to success Two years ago at Holly Hill S C Junior bought Dom ¬ quil as a yearling for 2500 from Eddie OBrien who acquired the horse at the Keeneland fall sales Queried as to the reason for buying Domquil Junior re ¬ plied that he liked the breeding Four Freedoms out of Jonquil but that as in many cases instinct gave him a little nudge His intuition proved correct not only for the amount of money the horse has already won but he recently turned down an offer of 25000 for Domquil DomquilMaybe Maybe the best horse in the barn is Mrs Bresnahan who rubs Domquil bandages him and takes excellent care of the whole string I take all the bows laughed Junior while my wife does all the work During the winter she hacks a lot of horses in South Carolina as we get them up to training Now only Tommy McGovern works Domquil McGovern is a Roxbury youngster under contract to Mrs Bresna ¬ han whom Junior thinks will develop into a good rider The lad is still a maiden jockey and has only ridden in seven races Eventually he will get to ride the big horse in the Bresnahan stable but the experience must come first firstAnother Another meal ticket In the stable is Long Hill an old horse he got last sum ¬ mer for 2000 A week later I would have been glad to take 500 for him he was so sore remarked Junior But with a lot of work we got him to the races He hadnt won 1000 when I bought him but last year with bonuses included he earned 8300 He has been getting the checks for me this year too He has finished two seconds and a fourth in three starts From hunters to mules to thoroughbreds its all in a lifetime lifetimeThe The Massachusetts Handicap Day pro ¬ gram has always been augmented by vari ¬ ous other attractions andthis year will be no exception Probably for the first time in history a fighter will work out at a race track while the plant is in operation At 1 p m on June 10 Tommy Collins whose fight with champion Jimmy Carter evoked some of the most outspoken of all criti ¬ cisms will box four threeminute rounds with his sparring partners The ring will be set up on the grandstand apron Collins who is a great favorite in Boston will show his fans that he suffered no ill effects from his fight with Carter After his workout workoutContinued
