JUDGES STAND CHARLES HATTON DELAWARE PARK Stanton Del June 5 It is not at all extravagant to say that the Brandywine Handicap of a mile and a sixteenth here this week end has attracted the classiest field in its 16 years history The lure an increase in value to 20 000 and Gil Haus acceptable weight arrangement The race brings to getner Royal Vale To Market Cold Command Post Card and others of not much less distinction for what should be one of the sharpest contests of the spring season in this area And since there is no conflict with New Jersey and Maryland tracks the attendance may approximate the 21000 Memorial Day The English Royal Vale who was only inches away while Tom Pool was inspiring superlatives in the Suburban must shoulder topweight of 128 pounds in the Brandywine Haus has estimated that he is six pounds more formidable than is To Market as ¬ signing the diminutive Cold Cammond 116 and PosfCard who deadheated Cochise for the 51 renewal a dismissive 109 pounds Nevertheless the robust son of Kingsway seems likely to be the post favorite He has a few tricks sometimes zigging when he should zag so to speak and was trying to lug in winning the Dixie But the experi ¬ enced Jack Westrope gets on well with him and he was the merest tick away from a mile and a quarter in 200 in his memorable duel with Tom Fool By the way Mrs Weirs importation also is a candidate for next weeks 50000 Massachusetts along with To Market and Cold Command The June 10 date is a trifle close and the Brandywine may determine their status statusA A A A AThe The entire racing world will have its ear to the ground tomorrow for news of the result of Englands Derby This renewal of Epsoms desperate mile and a half is rather special for the reason the new sovereigns Aureole is Brandywine Cap Attracts Classiest Field Derby Today Grips Attention of Turf World Pinza May Be Richards Lost Best Chance TeaMaker Recovers Winning Form at Del Delamong among the favorites andvthe further reason it may mark Sir Gordon Richards last chance to win the Derby It was sport inducing Aureole to behave at the gate last sea ¬ son but he is said to have reformed Richards is on a genuine stayer in Sir Victor Sasoons rather plain colt Pinza He is by Chanteur and like his rival Aureole is out of a mare by Donatello n a son of our Blenheim n It is diabolical that this greatest of all turf classics is the one stake which has eluded Richards throughout his long and singularly successful career He now is 49 and is seriously contemplating hanging up his tack perhaps to become a trainer as his son presently is in Ireland We have whiled away some pleasant times with Richards both at the courses where jockeys are free to mingle between races and at the Albany Sporting Club where he is secretary and favorite afterdinner speaker It was rumored there months ago he was to be knighted and in our opinion it couldnt have happened to a nicer guy Richards who is known fondly and simply as Gordon to millions of Britons is quite as admirable as a man as he has been successful as a jockey Many of his countrymen back him religiously and doubtless would do so if he were on a mule they have such abiding confidence in his saddle artistry He appears to have an uncanny talent for always entering the straight with his mount perfectly placed to move to the attack and they invariably have him to beat Americans had a look at his skillful protege Manny Mer ¬ cer in action last fall and we may hope that Richards himself will have the ride on an entrant in the Interna ¬ tional next November before he retires although he has insisted on a clause in his contracts he will not ride else ¬ where than in England Many of her loyal subjects are hopeful that if Good Queen Elizabeth n the Scots resent that H cannot win this Derby Good Old Gordon will realize his ambition His career should be an inspira ¬ tion to jockeys everywhere Delawarians will be interested also this week end to know the result of the Coaching Club American Oaks up at Belmont with particular reference to Cerise Reines performance she was so impressive in her hollow Dela ¬ ware Oaks success Again there is reason to believe she may play a return engagement at this point for the 100 000 New Castle Handicap New York observers were not especially moved by Kiss Me Kates race in the Suburban and indeed none of the older mares form this spring has been anything to frighten owners of good threeyearold fillies Thus we suppose that if Cerise Reines weight is acceptable and she is healthty trainer Howard Hoffman will van her back to Stanton Hoffman is incidentally one horseman who has not complained of the long rainy season Discussing Delaware Parks stakes for fillies and mares general manager Bryan Field remarked that it is hoped eventually to make the local Oaks 50000 main ¬ taining the New Castle at its present generous added value valueA A A A The venerable TeaMaker long a popular favorite with the racegoing public won his first race of thenew season as both a sentimental and duly accredited favorite here recently The career of Brose Clarks 10yearold has ar fictional quality which appeals to those who savor the romance of the turf And he has some things in common commonContinued Continued on Page FortyFive JUDGES STAND STANDBy By CHARLES HATTON Continued from Page FortyEight FortyEightwith with two other contemporary name horses for like Mrs Weirs Royal Vale he was a dismal failure throughthefield before the Clarks in resignation raced him on the flat The son of Only One and Tea leaves also had like MarkYeWell a trick stifle which kept him out of action as a young horse and in fact one of the reasons he was schooled to jump was on the theory this would tend to strengthen the muscle articulating the stifle Last season at an age most horses are in the limbo Tea Maker was voted the sprint champion of America Trained J Dallett Dolly Byers says he is a characterful old gaffer and he performs as if he knows more about racing than some of the riders and most of the horses he has met For instance when Ruthred challenged him in the Coronation Day Purse he appeared to hear this rival coming and dug in of his own accord beat ¬ ing him by a neck as if he could have won off had there been any occasion for such exhibitionism A A A ATurf Turf ana Breeders will be interested that a Royal Charger filly won a mile handicap recently in England Ben Jones could not say too much for the safety of the Dela ¬ ware Park course Surprising how many backed the successful Djebel filly Atlanta because they confused her with Atalanta Imagine getting a season to the 700000 Tulyar for 1680 But then the Irish Gov ¬ ernment bought him to make him available to Irelands breeders Some of our stud fees make one wonder about the wisdom of burying all the gold at Camp Knox There are eight stewards at Delaware Park including the visiting members of The Jockey Club and NSHA
