REFLECTIONS BY NELSON DUNSTAN NEW YORK N Y June 5 Threeyearolds again hold the east ¬ ern spotlight with the Coaching Club American Oaks at Belmont Park to ¬ morrow and followed next week end by the Belmont Stakes third and last leg of the Triple Crown Cerise Reine who made a runaway of the Delaware Oaks last Saturday is cer ¬ tain to be a topheavy favorite for the impending race for threeyearold fillies over the searching distance of one mile and three furlongs Even more strenuous is the Bel ¬ mont Stakes at one and onehalf miles and if Mrs Ada L Rices filly should win the Oaks there is a possibility that she will be sent against Native Dancer Jamie K and Royal Bay Gem in Belmonts most important event for sophomores The Peter Pan running on Wednesday brought two other likely Belmont starters into view in Invigorator and Isasmoothie who were onetwo at the end of the mile arid a furlong The Kentucky Derby and the Preakness had their thrills and the Belmont now shapes up as an event which is certain to answer many of the questions that exist regarding the threeyearold division The duel between Native Dancer and Jamie K will be the highlight of the race but the presence of Cer ¬ ise Reine would give it an added fillip Not since 1905 when Tanya was the winner has a filly been successful successfulA A A A AIt It is interesting that John Gaver is planning to start Tom Fool in the Carter Handicap to be run at Aqueduct on June 27 and the Brooklyn Handicap scheduled on July 11 at the same track The handsome son of Menow won the Metropolitan under 130 pounds and then with 128 staged one of the most thrilling duels with Royal Vale seen on Long Island in many a year in the Suburban Tom Fool is unbeaten this year and it is now a question what weight John B Campbell will assign the fouryear Cerise Reine Favorite in Coaching Club Rice Filly Also Eligible for Belmont Stakes Arcaro Giyen Great Ovation in Canada CanadaBill Bill Corum Makes Hit at Woodbine Park old in the two coming events While the Carter at seven furlongs is perfectly suited to Tom Fool there is a ques ¬ tion whether their previous duels will be renewed as Mrs duPont Weirs English invader like more distance of ground The Brooklyn is mores uited to Royal Vale but Arlington Park in Chicago will be operating at that time and Royal Vale is eligible for several stakes there nota ¬ bly the Stars and Stripes Handicap at one and oneeighth miles on July 4 He is also an eligible for the 100000 Hollywood Gold Cup on July 11 so it is doubtful as this writer has said on previous occasions whether he will be in the eastern area at the time the Brooklyn Handicap is run It will be interesting however to note how Camp ¬ bell rates these two horses who are now regarded as the best in the handicap ranks ranksA A A A The one day that he was at Woodbine Park Eddie Ar ¬ caro was given an ovation that cheered all Americans present At the Triangle Publications dinner the night before the race the famous little rider appeared late but when he entered the dining room everyone present stood up to join in a rousing welcome for the boy wha was to ride Canadiana the following day During the event it was announced that Gordon Richards the top English rider for the past 20 years had been knighted by Queen Elizabeth There were suggestions that Arcaro was also deserving of such honors When he arose to speak Magis ¬ trate S Tupper Bigelow chairman of the Ontario Racing Commission directed his remarks to Arcaro and said I will take the responsibility for having you made Sir Eddie Arcaro provided of course you come to Ontario to live Arcaro just sat there with a wide grin but we are willing to bet that no one will get him to move from his home on Long Island Theres an old story about a prophet and that is the case with Arcaro He had to go to Toronto to be honored as he deserves The Canadians say he is the greatest of them all Bill Corum our own Mr Kentucky Derby was an ¬ other who made a hit with the people in the land of the maple leaf After the running of the Queens Plate Cor ¬ um hooked up with Frank Conklin one of the leading breeders of Canada Conklin is a partner in Conklin Brothers the largest showmen on the North American continent not excluding Barnum Bailey Corum in ¬ sisted that he wanted a job with Conklin as a barker or spieler for the side show and Conklin replied that he would give him a job provided Bill would allow him to sell peanuts and popcorn at Churchill Downs on Derby Day If there are two things in this world this writer never expected to see it is Corum as a barker and Conk ¬ lin selling peanuts at Louisville Conklin operates Midway Farm at Brantford Ont and in recent years has been the leading breeder at the Canadian sales This year he has eight or nine head to offer but three of them are Count Fleet fillies and he is undecided whether he will sell them or race them in his own colors I am interested in aiding the improvement of the Canadian horse and to be frank about it 1 would like to keep these Count Fleet fillies for my own broodmare band he said It is not of en that a Canadian breeder can obtain such fillies as these Conk ¬ lin is correct in that for our American breeders are all allContinued Continued on Page FortyFive REFLECTIONS REFLECTIONSBy By NELSON DUNSTAN Continued from Page FortyEight FortyEightanxious anxious of the hour in Canadian racing In a comparatively short time Tay ¬ lor has become one of the foremost racing and breeding men of the world and his farm is one of the most attractive this writer has ever inspected The three barns are the last word in practical construction and it is apparent that like Conklin Tay ¬ lor is determined to improve the quality of Canadian breeding The new Ontario track which will soon be under construction is now occupying a great deal of his time and thoughts When the Woodbine meeting is over he plans a trip to Hollywood Park so he and the architects may study some of the factors that make the course at Ingle wood one of the outstanding on the Ameri ¬ can continent Conklin and many other breeders and racing owners in Ontario are interested in the new track between Toron ¬ to and Hamilton It is our understanding that Woodbine will be sold as a trotting track for night racing when the new course is completed We also learned that Colonel Marshall will continue to be the president of the Ontario Jockey Club There is no man better qualified for that position
