Between Races By OSCAR OTIS Coast Tracks Stress Juvenile Races Also Boost Interest in Fillies Mares Vanity Top Hollypark Distaff Stake StakeHOLLYWOOD HOLLYWOOD PARK Inglewood Calif June 5 Perhaps the most significant de ¬ velopment in California summer racing of the last decade has been the recognition of the importance of two yearold racing a rec ¬ ognition long wanted bj the breeders but more or less frowned upon by management until the last five years Del Mar took the lead ¬ ership in emphasizing twoyearold stake rac ¬ ing through sheer ne ¬ cessity and circum ¬ stance Del Mar didnt have the funds available to offer 100000 or even 50000 added stakes for handicap horses and de ¬ cided that as long as it could not hope to become preeminent in that field it might as well try to cultivate the twoyearold situation and add to the prestige of the course by proving up the youngsters It is a matter of record that the Del Mar Fu ¬ turity and Del Mar Debutante were terrific right from their inaugural runnings and more than did the job It is our personal opinion that much of the increased attend ¬ ance and tote interest at the Surf and Turf Club is directly traceable to the sus ¬ tained suspense provided by these two stakes stakesIncidentally Incidentally much the same situation was responsible for the carding of the 100000 added 250000 gross Garden State at Camden this fall for in finally making a bid for world prestige Eugene Mori and his associates found the three yearold classic field the handicap field and the international field already pre ¬ empted That Coast summer tracks have hit pay dirt in the matter of twoyearold competition may be gleaned from the an ¬ nouncement of James D Stewart gen ¬ eral manager of Hollywood Park that from here on even greater opportunities will be provided juveniles over and above the original program of five major and seven primary stakes for youngsters with a minimum of eight twoyearold races a week inclusive of these stakes stakesThe The next major step for California will be a more than token recognition of fillies and mares especially ia stakes One rea ¬ son that California breeding has not de ¬ veloped more rapidly is that in general fil lies and mares of quality just about have to be proved up against colts or else see their earning potential sharply limited This situation is highlighted by the item that tomorrow afternoon West Coast fans will find their stakes enjoyment in the 25000 Vanity Handicap at a mile and one sixteenth Hollywood frankly admits it is the most important of the three major Inr glewood stakes exclusively for fillies and mares and victory in the Vanity is consid ¬ ered decisive for summer honors even though the Hollywood Oaks is run later in the season and most turf analysts would insist that victory in the Oaks would cer ¬ tainly entitle a threeyearold filly for top summer honors consideration considerationJust Just why fillies and mares have never been able to create genuine public inter ¬ est on the CoaSt is one of those things which nobody can answer with certainty but if the experience with the twoyear olds may be taken as a criterion it prob ¬ ably boils down to lack of education f the fans and if this be true we dare sar the filly and mare situation will right itself within the foreseeable future Then and then only will California sum ¬ mer racing have the meticulous balanee which helps make New York racing so outstanding outstandingIt It is down in black and white in the American Racing Manual that the Van ¬ ity has never been won by inferior horse and this the 13th running promises to be no exception The Biriglin Stables Etolia n won the inaugural running back in 1940 and then came Painted Veil Hap ¬ py Issue the immortal Busher Be Faith ¬ ful Honeymoon Hemet Squaw Silver Drift Next Move Bewitch and Two Lea The greatest of these all proved themselves against the colts most notably Busher Happy Issue Next Move and Two Lea Happy Issue and Two Lea both won the 100000 net guaranteed to winner Gold Cup Honeymoon missed by heartbreaking inches to Triplicate in 1946 while Busher of course was never happier than when dusting off colts most any time any place Happy Issue as we recall also was the first mare to smash 202 for a mile and a quar ¬ ter winning her Gold Cup in 201 although last year Two Lea under 113 pounds won her Cup in 200ys 200ysEarlier Earlier this week Carolos graduated into the ranks of stakes winners by taking the fivefurlong Coronation and thereby gave an added lift to the growing stature of Russia H as one of Californias lead ¬ ing stallions Russia n won the Mel ¬ bourne Cup and defeated Shannon II on occasion in his native land and in his Continued on Page ForfyFye BETWEEN RACES RACESBy By scored some of his most brilliant vic ¬ tories here in the West on heart alone In discussing the intrinsic merit of Intent with his best known trainer W J Buddy Hirsch who saddled him in all his Western outings we learn that Hirsch rates the son of War Relic as having just missed the ranking of a true great a ranking he ob ¬ viously reserves for anly a very few horses of the last 30 years Intrigued we asked Hirsch how he differentiated between just top flight and actual greatness and he re ¬ marked It is a hard thing to explain in words but my yardstick includes several factors among them being the ability to overcome trouble and still win winThere There were a few characteristics about Intent which saw him need a few condi ¬ tions in his o h favor if he were to beat the best Nevertheless he was an able race horse and I believe he has a chance to become one of Americas better sires He had plenty of heart and was willing In rating Intent we believe it should be done on his Santa Anita form for he never was quite the same after his last date with the firing irons We also have the notion that Harry Isaacs of Brook field Farm may be quite correct when he tells us he believes that Intent has some ¬ thing of an opportunity to make War Relic one of the few dominant male off ¬ spring lines of Man o War in this coun ¬ try Man o War line hiares have done better by far in general than have his sons at stud
