being something extraordinary in racing and if the signs that are now on display live up to expectations something new in records may be established California racing centers Los Angeles and San Fran ¬ cisco are a long way from New York but they appear to be the bases from which a hitherto unbelievable record in jockey win ingsmay be set Willie hoemaker the quiet competent crafts ¬ man who in his brief so jurn in the East with the fashionable Brookmeade Stable dispelled all doubts among the eastern critics relative to his ability has set his sights on amassing a total of 400 winners for the year This figure is well within the realm of possibility for he rides on an average of six or seven races daily and triumphs in a goodly number At the pace he is progressing and barring accidents or suspensions when the waning days of December are just around the corner he could not be far from the mark Shoe ¬ maker tied with Joe Culmone for national riding honors in 1950 with 338 but in 1951 dropped to 257 while Culmone came up with 152 Last year Shoemaker drove home 315 winners while Culmore all but faded from the limelight with but 93 gleaned from 614 mounts They say that records are made to be broken and this could be the year yearAlso Also on the West Coast is the veteran Johnny Longden who steadily adds to his mark over the years to artomatically set a new standard every time he rides one home The horses tht the boys ride are important and in this respect two names stand out vividly as potential rec ¬ ord breakers They are Alfred Vander bilts gray ghost Native Dancer and Tom Fool from the Greentree Stable StableNative Native Dancer could threaten the three yearold gleanings amassed by Citation of 709420 piled up by 19 victories in 20 starts There are still a lot of 100 grand pots left to be decided before New Years Day shows up Then there is Tom Fool This fellow could develop and many are so predicting that he will into a standout handicap performer weights and all and come up with greater earnings than Armed Noor or Crafty Admiral Tom Fool has a busy season ahead of him and ac ¬ cording to close observers he is as sound as a bell of brass and should race on for a long time Well the omens are promising and added to those there is a little matter of twoyearold winnings which are by no means to be overlooked later in the season seasonTommy Tommy Rogan an
