Eleven Sophomores In Commonwealth CommonwealthSuffolk Suffolk EvenfRun as Free Handicap and Over the Turf Course Park Dandy Favored FavoredBy By AVERY BROWN BROWNStaff Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS East Boston Mass June 5 The seventeenth running of the Commonwealth Handicap will be presented at Suffolk Downs as the feature event to ¬ morrow and although the event is well known in this sector it will be offered in a new phase A former stakes event since the inauguration of racing in the Bay State the Commonwealth has been classi ¬ fied as a free handicap exclusively for threeyearolds this year and for the first time the race will be conducted over the turf course at about a mile and a six ¬ teenth Eleven sophomores have been named overnight to contest the grass event and all but one of the eligibles is a poten ¬ tial candidate for the richer Yankee Hand ¬ icap to be run on the main course on June 17 17W W J Beatties Park Dandy is the high weight of the field under an impost of 123 pounds one more than assigned to Bon crist Farms Better Goods J M Grieves Miss Joanne the only filly in the Common ¬ wealth is highly regarded by racing secre ¬ tary Eb Pons who assigned the daughter of Challenge Me 118 which with her sex allowance makes her at even weights with Park Dandy DandyMrs Mrs M J Bresnahan Jrs Dpmquil 115 W L Curies Little Lucky 112 Mrs J H Woodcocks Epic King 112 C T Chenerys Montenegrin 109 B Gottsmans Go Go Go 108 Chenerys Hunters Union 106 Green Dune Farms Double Header H 105 and Zuern Lackers Battle Day 104 complete the lineup Double Header n is not eligible for the Yankee YankeeMany Many Making Grass Course Bows BowsMany Many of the main contenders in the Commonwealth will be making their bow over the grass course and therefore the race must be considered one of the most open events offered here this season Park Dandy holds enough class by finishing sec ¬ ond to Royal Bay Gem in the Jersey Stakes at Garden State over a sloppy racing strip should be enough endorsement for his chances here Prior to shipping to the Jer ¬ sey oval the son of Bull Dandy Park Ave ¬ nue registered three straight victories at Lincoln Downs one of which was a well deserved score over older horses In his lone start here last week the bay gelding was not fully extended after escaping a jam soon after the start of the sixfurlong test testBetter Better Goods has not been postward since the Jersey Stakes in which he was third a head back of the Beattie gelding In the Jersey Trial which preceded the richer Garden State event the son of Good Goods turned in a creditable second His races in Florida during the past winter were mostly creditable and if he can negotiate the turnr here he must be considered a decided threat Miss Joanne defeated threeyearold rivals in the Constitution Handicap also a free handicap on the main course earlier in the meeting The speedy miss was not meeting the caliber of sophomores she is asked to vie against tomorrow and the task should be a real test testDomquil Domquil is a surprise entry for the Com ¬ monwealth Junior Bresnahan trainer for his wife had previously announced that he did not intend to send his star sprinter over a distance of ground and especially not on the grass The speedy son of Four Freedoms recently turned in 110 the fastest six furlongs of the current meeting and that was accomplished after nearly getting knocked to his knees a furlong after the start of the race raceLittle Little Lucky is gradually becoming the darling of the New England patrons The Pot o Luck colt finished in whirlwind fashion in the final quarter mile He has won three races here in that fashion fashionMontenegrin Montenegrin is one member of tomor ¬ rows field which has already distinguished himself on the grass In his lone outing over the course the homebred chestnut gelding established a track jrecord for a mile and won very impressively In that same race Go Go Go had established the early pace and finished a creditable second secondEpic Epic King raced commendably as a juve ¬ nile but has yet to live up to expectations as a sophomore It is said that his connec ¬ tions have not given up on the Kings Blue gelding and the Commonwealth may be the spot for him to reward their faith
