Pirates Refused Permission To Raze Greenberg Gardens GardensPITTSBURGH PITTSBURGH Pa June 5 UP The National League refused the Pittsburgh Pirates permission today to tear down the Greenberg Gardens a leftfield wire bar ¬ rier which became a home run heaven for Ralph Kiner and other right handed slug ¬ gers gersLeague League president Warren G Giles told the Pirate general manager Branch Rickey that three clubs has protested the removal of the barrier until after the end of the 1953 season seasonWorkmen Workmen already had begun preparatory work for the dismantling because Rickey was confident that there would be no ob ¬ jection to taking out the barrier which shortens left field by 30 feet Rickey had wanted the wire out by tonights game with Cincinnati and announced immediately af ¬ ter Kiners trade yesterday that it would be removed at once onceGiles Giles gave Rickey verbal approval to dp so but then changed his decision on discovering a league rule against chang ¬ ing the limits of fences The rule in the leagues minutes of 1949 was very speci ¬ fic and I then polled the clubs Giles told Rickey in a letter of explanation to ¬ day He said there was some question as to whether six votes or a unanimous vote was necessary to waive the provision but the question became academic because three of the seven clubs heard from have voted not to waive the rule in this case
