Sportsmans Park Notebook Jockey Skoronski Back in Usual Spring Stride at Cicero Course By J J MURPHY SPORTSMANS PARK Cicero HI May 1 Jockey Anthony Skoronski who for years has been one of the most controversial riders at Sportsmans Park is back in his usual spring stride Like the flowers and the trees Tony seems to bloom at this time of year He may not be so dangerous when Tank Frnst is nipping at the foliage in autumn but right now he is in his ele ¬ ment Skoronski was one of the leading jockeys at the first meeting at Sports ¬ mans Park last season and he bids fair to be right there again this semester During the first five days of the session which inci ¬ dentally were for charity he rode six win ¬ ners to be second on the list back of Ron ¬ nie Baldwin The halfmile horse players and they are a set apart seem to either love Tony or deplore him However we believe the cheers when he rides a winner far overshadow the razzberries when le pilots a loser Tony used to be a rather hotheaded chap who resented the criti ¬ cism but like Eddie Arcaro TonyDe Spirito and others who have been the butt of abuse in the past he now appears to take it in stride He became peeved at something or other last autumn and would not ride at Sportsmans Park His many followers hope he can control his emotions as he is a good rider Too good it rider to be idle idleA A A AJockey Jockey Harold Red Keene who usually battles it out with Skoronski for the riding championship at Sportsmans Park had but three winners during the first five days of racing Keene who is once again in the employ of William Hal Bishop now has a new agent in the person of George Swain the veteran who at one time was agent for Eddie Arcaro and later an official on Chicago tracks Ronnie Baldwin who is leading the pack with nine winners in the first five days has been doing most of the horsebacking for Marion Van Berg Baldwin was a good apprentice and has continued to show form as a full fledged jockey Another veteran here who is showing up well is Job Dean Jessop He is an accomplished reinsman reinsmanA A A A AJockey Jockey Melvin Duhon has announced his intention of riding at the Fairmount Park meeting He will leave for the Collinsville course Monday or Tuesday Webb Everett former racing secretary had quite a time visiting with friends here the other day He departed for Louisville to take in the run ¬ ning of the Derby Roy Waldron who trained a Kentucky Derby winner in Galla hadion is expected to arrive at Washing ¬ ton Park Monday with four horses the property of the Bwamazon Stable Roy had one horse Breakers at Santa Anita last winter and also assisted Willie Alvarado with the runners of Anita King and Harry Brown Anovas an eightyearold geld ¬ ing owned by Milo Cox fractured a ses amoid bone in his right front leg during the running of the third race Friday and was destroyed by Paul J Meginnis track veterinarian Tree Top was ordered with ¬ drawn from the same event when he showed soreness going to the post postA A A A ATwo Two candidates for the Miss America Stakes a twoyearold filly feature to be run during the Lincoln Fields meeting have checked in They are Merriwolf a daughter of Noble Hero Leonardtown by Solace who won the Florida Breeders Stakes in a field of 19 and is owned by L S Green of Gary Ind and Miss Gwen ¬ dolyn who races for the Fortune Stable Marion VanBerg has purchased the sixyearold gelding Lone Pilot from Ed Meloncon Chuck Miller Hawthorne track superintendent had assumed training of Blue Rogue who is owned by Mrs Mil ¬ ler Jockey Leslie Wickel will leave for Fairmount Park to be on hand for the opening The mare Carpet Sweep has been sent to Howard Reinemans Crown Crest Farm in Kentucky to be mated to Wine List Trainer W W Morrow was an arrival with seven horses including Mister Carter a good twoyearold son of Destine Carter Girl by Plowshare Mister Carter owned by Mr and Mrs Tom Pow ¬ ell of Houston Texas finished third in a division of the Hialeah Juvenile Stakes He will be shipped back to Kentucky to run in the Bashford Manor and jockey Paul Bailey will ride him in that event eventA A A A AOwner Owner William Wiggins who has been visiting departed for his home in Colum ¬ bus Ohio Owners Ray Decker and Carlos Salerno were arrivals from St Louis for a few days of the sport They have horses in training here B W Simpson owner of the Kalamazoo Stable came in inContinued Continued on Page FortyNine Sportsmans Notebook NotebookBy By J J MURPHY Continued from Page Three Threefrom from Kalamazoo Mich accompanied by Mrs Simpson Elmer Loux owner of the New England Stable lives in Indian ¬ apolis Ind and came in from that city for a week end of the sport here The latest rider to check into Sportsmans Park is James Fidler a 25yearold apprentice from Toledo Ohio who is under contract to Al Horton Fidler can ride at 102 pounds and won his first race at Great Falls Mont last August He had a record of tvo successes in 40 mounts last year
