CONNORS CORNER By Chuck Connors BELMONT PARK Elmont L I N Y May 1 The post mortems ifs becauses and howcomes of the weekend racing gave the paddock gang a full day of exercise gum beating that is to while away the long hours of Sunday The Derby Swift the turf race Garden States opening and a couple of hunt meetings furn ¬ ished the tidbits for the boys to chew over and vent their knowl ¬ edge The main course of the Sunday discus ¬ sion was the number of threeyearolds engaged in the Derby and the Swift The Derby attracted 18 and the Swift 19 which was regarded as something of a phenomena following the printing of the accident list in the past few weeks The boys granted readily that there was no comparison in the two races one a sprint and the other over a distance of ground but their reason ¬ ing was along the lines to bring out the fact that despite the calamity list there were some threeyearolds still in training trainingA A A A AThe The boys also pointed out that the Preakness down in Baltimore will come in for a lot of propaganda for they pointed out that a couple of newcomers to the aspiring ranks of title holders will be seen in that state They cited Artismo and Porterhouse as the two outstanding for this event and later on in the summer an invader from England The Pie King Er rard King Man of Destiny and The Prince Anyway the retirement of Turnto they agreed left a big gap in the front line but this was described as one of the fortunes of war and let it go at that The boys also agreed that when the fall season rolls around the bright shining hopefuls of the spring may have faded and some hitherto unheard of youngster may dominate the scene This could happen it has happened before and that is thatA that A A A ABelmont Belmont Park will present its big three yearold offering on Saturday June 12 some six weeks hence and by that time the situation may be cleared or in a mud ¬ dle similar to what prevailed a couple of weeks back The Westchester Racing As ¬ sociation went through its first full week of racing in good shape The weather was not the best but the boys and girls came out to pay homage to king thoroughbred on several occasions under for the week end He was busy officiating as a steward at the Warrenton Va hunts meeting meetingA A A A Sidney Jacobs came up from Garden State for Friday and opined that every ¬ thing would be all right Frank Dough ¬ erty shipped Sam McKee to Pimlico for racing at that point Harry Goldsmith checked in from Miami and will stay in this area for a few weeks J M Roeb ling was among those present for the after ¬ noon He came over from his Harmony Hollow New Jersey farm Thomas Bruder who races under the nom de course of Clinton Farms came over from Phila ¬ delphia for a looksee Friday and reported that he would be at Garden State for the opening Mose and Skip Shapoff took a busmans holiday and showed up from Garden State Park for the afternoon Isidore Bieber stated that Paper Tiger was named for Senator Joe McCarthy Steve Rowan checked in at Jamaica with a draft of horses from Gulf stream Park Aqueduct nomination blanks for the stake offerings at that track are available at the secretarys office The fixtures close on May 15 Johnny Breen a victim of avoirdupois which forced his retirement from the riding ranks is on hand He is an insurance salesman for the present Word from Miami is to the effect that Dan Chappell who races under the nom de course of the Sunshine Stable will not be along for some time They have a couple of elections coming off in the state during the next couple of weeks weeksA A A A Trainer Jimmy Conway reported that Tahitian King owned by the B F Whit aker estate is training nicely but he is in the dark as to his seasonal debut Trainer Tommy Root is of the opinion that W M Wickhams White Skies will face the starter in the Roseben Handicap a sevenfurlong sprint three weeks hence Earl Sande the handy guy is a regu ¬ lar these afternoons He reported that he was floating along with the tide Trainer Tommy Kelley racked up his first score at Belmont Park when Ruthred carrying the silks of the Miamian Mrs C Silvers downed some representative sprin ¬ ters Tim Mara the football impres sario came out for the afternoon and joined the Californians in rooting for Cor ¬ relation in the Derby with a saver on the winner whoever he should be Oleg Dubasoff who has the Lazy F Ranch and other horses reported that he will journey to Kentucky within the next two weeks He said that the three of the Lazy F Ranch broodmares had foaled but that one more was due His trip is to inspect the new arrivals and the other horses in that area Trainer George M Odom recovered from a touch of bronchial virus showed up yes ¬ terday following a weeks absence Mrs Widener Wichfeld deferred her visit to New York until later in the summer She is at her Palm Beach home Joe Dono hue who made the trek to the Derby re ¬ ported that he will inspect High Bandit the Irish importation who is standing in Kentucky There was a scurrying around the paddock before the sixth race when alternates in the absentee trainers were called upon to saddle starters in the Swift Among the absentees were Syl Veitch E Hayward Eddie Neloy and J B Theall Aidan Roark a steward at Ar ¬ lington Park is due here on Monday He arrives from Ireland where he was a tour ¬ ist on horse matters
