NEW JERSEY REPORT By Fred Galiani GARDEN STATE PARK Camden N J May 1 In recent years the South Amer ¬ ican influence has proven quite strong in the U S We have got ¬ ten the samba mamba Carmen Miranda Fer ¬ nando Lamas and of course Senor Horatio Luro Importation of horses really began in earnest after the late Clarence Shockley brought a couple up to Aqueduct in the wan ¬ ing years of the book ¬ makers and proceeded to pull off one of the last of the big coups Shockley sent out Caballero II and Sahri II on one after ¬ noon and the unwary gentlemen of the slates were caught napping to the tune of many dollars when both proceeded to win After that the South American horses mainly from Argentina and Chile were im ¬ ported in droves Jockeys from below the equator were no exception and Ruperto Donoso Jorge Contreras Jose Bravo and Guillermo Silva to name a few have per ¬ formed in this country Now we have an ¬ other country of S A to be heard from Making his debut today is probably the only Equadorian pilot to appear in this country countryHe He is Walter Carrion a swarthy stocky pilot of 29 years who hits the scales at 110 pounds Carrion has been riding for 14 years in South America After breaking his maiden in his native Equador he toured the continent below and performed in Peru Venezuela Panama and Colomba From 1941 to 1946 he was the leading rider in Bogota Columbia This is his first appear ance in the U S although he has ridden in Canada and just arrived from Havana In Cuba this past season he was the second leading rider with over 60 winners He doesnt speak any English but then neither do the horses so it shouldnt affect his riding Carrion is under contract to trainer Eugene Navarro a fellow of similar Latin ancestry who just wound up a good year in Florida FloridaThe The brothers Kelly Eddie and Tommy are expected to be well up on the leading trainers list at this meeting Both condi ¬ tion powerful stables Eddie handling 20 head for the Brookf ield Farm and Tommy 26 for the Ada L Rice stable John D Mooney who 30 years ago won the Ken ¬ tucky Derby on Black Gold sold his last SA Influence on American Turf Send Over Good Horses Jockeys Walter Carrion Florida and yes ¬ terday was the guest of Mary Biddle on her WIP Philadelphia radio program programCol Col John Donovan teller of tall tales is distributing stall applications for the thebackstretch backstretch SammyBoulmetis will divide his riding chores between this point and New York On Wednesday he will be at Belmont to ride Incidentally in the Acorn Stakes Tommy W Kelly registered three horses of his large outfit the majority of which he has in New York Kelly who arrived on the scene here last year with 12 horses now has 42 in his stable the greater part the property of Mrs Charles Silvers of Miami Beach He left 34 in New York where he will campaign for the most part and has one each for Mrs Silvers his wife and John Machise president of the New Jersey division of the HBPA here hereGeorge George Palmer who is again starting the fields here reported that the recent Oaklawn meeting where he was steward was one of the best in history He was obviously impressed by the youngster Royal Note who has lived up to his ad ¬ vance billing Willie Hartack who ranks well up on the leading jockey list in the country will pursue his trade here throughout the entire Jersey season Har ¬ tack leading rider at the recent Laurel meeting is under contract to Ada L Rice and his engagements are made by Chick Lang Another jock up from Maryland is Roger LeBlanc who was one of the better apprentices here last season until he was injured at Atlantic City He only resumed this spring and will still ride with the bug the authorities giving him an extension of the time he lost through in ¬ juries juriesFamiliar Familiar riders to local patrons are Gayle Smith who became something of a long shot specialty rider with his victories last year Jack Skelly W B Williams Karl Korte Charlie Burr Joe Culmone Joe LiCausi and of course Jimmy Stout Newcomers are John Choquette affiliated with the strong J L McKnight string and Don Scurlock The latter appeared in Jer ¬ sey just twice here last season but made both sorties profitable ones winning the Olympic Handicap at Atlantic City with Crafty Admiral and the Trenton Handicap here on Olympic Scurlocks book is being made by Jimmy Donaldson DonaldsonAlthough Although the meeting is under way stall superintendent George Dolan is still having his headaches There were 1600 applica ¬ tions for the 1150 available stalls The latter figure does not include stalls occu ¬ pied by ponies and used as feed rooms Latest addition to Ty Sheas secretarial force is Jimmy Picarillo secretary at the New England fairs and an official at other tracks in the Northeast Billy Fisk who has scored numerous triumphs on the colorful mare Sickles Image is free ¬ lancing here and awaiting the return of the Hartwick racer who is in training in Kentucky
