Pirates Outbid Steelers For Ace College Athlete PITTSBURGH, Pa., June 16 UP. The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced the bonus signing of righthanded pitcher Hugh McLaurin Pepper m., of Vaughan, Miss., who also was drafted last winter by the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League. It was a rare instance where two professional athletic clubs within the same city dickered for the services of a college athlete. The Steelers said the club still hopes Pepper will try pro football. He, was drafted as the Steelers sixth choice and has one more season of eligibility at Mississippi Southern where he played halfback.
