Sickles Image Drills Five-Eighths in 1:00 Sparkling Effort Earns Her Role Of Favorite for Rose Leaves DETROIT RACE COURSE, livonia, Mich., June 16. Clarence Hartwicks homebred mare, Sickles Image, fleet six-year-old daughter of Sickletoy and the ill-fated Ariel Image, earned the favorite post for the Saturday running of the 0,000 Rose Leaves Stakes this morning when she whirled five-eighths of a mile over the fast track in 1:00 handily. The Hartwick mare was not asked for her best speed at any stage of the impressive trial and pulled up nicely after her drilL Sickles Image went by the initial quarter mile marker in :23, passed the three-furlong pole in :35 and streaked by the half in :47 while under a snug hold. . The Hartwick mare, a good stakes winner throughout her colorful career, is no stranger to Michigan racing followers for she won the 1952 F. M. Alger Memorial Handicap at the local oval. During the same season she was successful in the Los Cerritos Handicap at Santa Anita and annexed Garden States Vineland Handicap, picking up earnings of over 05,000. Sickles Image won five of her 13 starts during her, 1953 campaign, scoring one of her greatest triumphs in the rich Washington Park Handicap over an unusually fine field. Ruhe, Indian Hemp and Tuscany were nearest her in the Illinois stake, which mile was decided in 1:36 oyer a track termed no better than good. The Rose Leaves Stakes will mark Sickles Images initial appearance under silks this year and she certainly appears sharp for her seasonal debut.
