Flanagan Again Steward At Delaware This Season Well-Known Official Returns After Several Years Absence STANTON, Del.. May 16. — Joseph F. Flanagan, well known racing official and breeder of Elkridge, champion money-winning steeplechase horse of all time, will return to Delaware Parks stewards stand this season after an absence of several years. The Stanton tracks 32 - day meeting opens May 29. Flanagan, also steward representing the Maryland Racing Commfssion at all thoroughbred tracks in the state, served at Delaware Park for many years until he suffered a temporary illness. In recent years, Calvin Rainey has filled the post of association steward, but he has been sidelined through illness, and Flanagan, formerly steward for the Delaware Racing Commission, now succeeds him. Another change in Delaware Parks ,of- I ficial family. for 1957. as approved by the | Delaware Racing Commission, finds War-j ren Mehrtens as steward representing The Jockey Club, replacing the late George Brown Jr. Mehrtens, one of racings up- and-coming officials and a former jockey | of note most famed for winning the Triple Crown races astride Assault in I I 1946, has filled numerous official capacities on his way to becoming a steward. Back as steward representing the Delaware Racing Commission will be still another experienced official. Edward T. McLean. Others approved include: Steeplechase steward. Howard C. Fair: racing secretary, J. Gilbert Haus; assistant | racing secretary. Allan W. Lavin: placing judges, A. E. Abadie, Charles Triplett and Henry Erickson; patrol judges. John C. Daly, Frank Ritz, Lucas Dupps and William OConnor; paddock judge. William OConnor; clerk of scales, Jolm E. OHara; timer. Carroll E. Burns; starter, George R. Palmer; track veterinarian, Dr. David W. Crisman. The Jockey Club has appointed Cort-right Wetherill its visiting member for the meeting. ,
