VICARESS DEFEATS ANGELIC Graduates From Maiden Ranks by Winning Astoria Purse Runyon Filly Tires Badly in Final Drive of Aqueduct Headliner Three Juve ¬ nile Races NEW YORK N Y June 14 William Woodwards Vicaress a daughter fo Flying Ebony and Valkyr which had seasoning in Florida during the winter without escaping the ranks of the maidens found herself at Aqueduct today to carry the silks of the chairman of The Jockey Club to victory in the Astoria Purse In her victory she emu ¬ lated her dam a daughter of Man o War which started in the same prize for Gif ford Cochran CochranIn In winning the filly showed quality and took the measure of Mrs Damon Runyons Angelic winner of the Youthful Stakes at Jamaica in which Duke Bellizzi met his fatal accident riding Psychic Bid Third and close up was Ed Shaffers Watersplash while Willis Sharpe Kilmers Galomar was a distant fourth fourthWith With three of todays races for the two yearolds a steeplechase and a six furlongs dash there was only one race barring the steeplechase over a distance greater than six furlongs It was a mile offering at the end of the card But interest was taken in the card by a large crowd crowdThe The defeat of Angelic in the Astoria Purse was the surprise of the day but no good excuse could be offered for the daugh ¬ ter of Infinite She and Vicaress raced away in the lead shortly after leaving the stalls and they dominated the race Until well around the turn of the course they were closely lapped but in the final furlong Vic ¬ aress began to draw away until her winning margin was two lengths lengthsUnder Under a drive Angelic tired so badly that Watersplash was steadily wearing her down to be beaten only a half length for second place Galomar was another that tired In the early racing she was in third place but under pressure she dropped back badly until she was seven lengths back of the Shaffer filly fillyAnother Another that disappointed in the running was George D Wideners Sweetbroom a recent winner at Belmont Park She was outrun all the way to be last of the six that performed Rigan McKinney the amateur brought his Escapade home winner of the short course steeplechase by one of the smartest rides he has shown this year He plainly outrode and outgeneraled the professional P Mc GinniSj who rode Gwladys Whitneys Ride away and Dawson who had the mount on J R Macombers Redbridge the ones to finish second and third The other starters were Five OClock and George JesseLand they were outrun all the way wayLittle Little Litzenberger rode his second win ¬ ner of the day when he brought home Mrs Sidney Goochs Jeanne S winner of the third race This was another five furlongs dash for cheap twoyearolds and the daugh ter of Gallant Fox had to be much the best to win for she was apparently soundly beat ¬ en a furlong from the finish where she came with a great rush to win over S G Baileys Polly Plum and Mrs E A Burkes Polytude was third
