READY FOR THE OPENING AT BENNINGS. Unprecedented Number of Horses at the Course Race King Liked For the Handicap. Washington. D. C, March 21. The snow has disappeared and clear weather and a good track arc expected for the. opening of the Washington Jockey Clubs spring meeting Monday. The card for the first day is a good one. The feature will be the First Bennings Spring Handicap at three-quarters of a mile over the Columbia course. Race King is best liked of the sixteen horses carded. "Father Bill" Daly is telling his friends that Warning is a cinch. Jimmy McLaughlin is supposed to have better than a fair chance with Jack McKeon. If Computer falls to win the race for two-year-olds, the Marylanders will be sadly disappointed. This youngster Is a half brother to The Veiled Lady, which is carded for the handicap, and he is the first of the get or Compute to sport silk. He was brought up from the farm in Carroll County, Maryland, by Fred Llttlcfield on Wednesday and on Thursday he showed a half in .54, accompanied by Tire Veiled Lady. They ran the first eighth in .12. Computer is probably the largest two-year-old at the track 15.31 and girthing 74 inches. Two weeks ago this colt weighed 1,040 pounds, and yet he is so well proiortloiied and put together that he docs not look awkward, as most abnormally large two-year-olds generally do. Although the stables are nearly filled, horses are still arriving in large numbers. Where those to cnine are to be stabled only Superintendent Straban knows, and lie wisely enough keeps his troubles to himself. He has only 050 stalls, from which must Iw deducted a certain proportion for feed and tackle rooms. And there are close to 500 horses here now. Visitors are alredy pouring into the city, though the greatest number from New York are to arrive un the Cavanagh Special which leaves Gotham tomorrow afternoon. The report that Ben Hoddcr has been sold to Paul Powers for ,000 was premature, although the colt may change hands at that. Suu Fire threw a stifle out o joint while galloping and is temporarily out of training. Eight of the Waldeu horses arrived from Bowling Brook today.
