Second to Miller in number and aggregate value of stake races won. is jockey George Mountain of Chicago. In all he has ridden successfully in twenty-four such races of the value of 25,015. Winning three at City Park, New Orleans, early in the year, he went east and on the first day of the metropolitan racing season, signalized his advent by winning the Carter Handicap with Glorificr. From that tiimou until tlie early part of the Saratoga meeting his success was of the most marked character, but in the last throe mouths he has done lint little riding, and according to some critics fell off in form, which may or may not be true. Mountain is a full grown and sensible man and will probably be able to ride near the hundred point mark when most of the younger cracks of the present day will have become incapacitated from riding by reason of increased weight. His principal successes were in riding the winners of the City- Park Derby, Carter Handicap. Preakness Stakes, Parkway Handicap, Hudson Stakes. Itelmont Stakes, Eclipse Stakes, Bedford Stakes, Standard Stakes, Astoria Stakes, Surf Stakes, second half of the Double Event, the Lawrence Realization and the Flash Stakes. Nicol has won the same number of stake races as Mountain, but their combined value is much less. Of his twenty-four stakes won ten were at New Orleans, Toronto, Butfalo and Latonia, where values rule low as compared witli the New York tracks. Still he won tlie rich Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga with Jim Cauney ami the Century Stakes at Slieeps-liead Bay with Ballot. Aside from these two great events he has the Buffalo Derby. Cincinnati Trophy, Autumn Maiden. Partridge, Dash. Waldorf and Golden Hod Stakes, Oriental Handicap, First Special and Second Special to his credit among other events. In all essentials of good horsemanship Nicol is about the best jockey riding in this country. Tlie rising young rider Notter has ridden the winners of twenty-one stake races of the value of 03,700, and has to his credit such principal events as tlie Advance Stakes. Brighton Handicap and til-lies share of the Produce Stakes. In addition he has ridden tlie winners of tlie Withers Stakes. j Fashion Stakes. Swift, Spring. Iroquois, Alabama and Travers Stakes, and the Kings County, Islip, Winged Foot. Flying. Omnium and Occidental Handicaps. Notter is said to be a well mannered, intelligent boy of good habits and increasing skill, lie is to ride at New Orleans next winter for C. R. Ellison, and is quite likely to be the star of the riding brigade there. The only other jockey who has ridden the winners . of twenty stake races this year is Garner. This boy has not done much recently, but at New Orleans last winter and in the spring and early sum- . mer racing in the vicinity of New York rode with skill, vigor and success second to none. In the Commonwealth Handicap he gave as line an exhlbi-bition of masterly jockeyship on Montgomery as lias been seen this year Besides that big success he won the Metropolitan Handicap with Glorificr, and his other triumphs include the Queen Citv Handicap. It. is noticeable that Glorificr is in active training again, and it may be that before long the formerlv effective combination of Garner and Glorificr is to regain its former popularity.
