WOOLLEY AND HIS AUSTRALIAN RIDER Frank Wootton. an Australian jockey now riding with success in England, can lay chihn to a record unsurpassed by a boy or his tender years. At ten years of age he won the valuable Gohllields Handicap in South Africa, and since then he has ridden with marked success in Tour other countries. The Australian phenomenon never rode a cleverer or more resourceful race than he did on Woollev in the Portland Plate. A less experienced lightweight would have found himself in a hopeless tangle at the start, when Snowllight crossed those on her left, for which offense Trigg afterwards came under the ban of the stewards. The Welkin was almost knocked down, and this doubtful compliment was handed on to Melayr. who in turn almost brought down Jovial. Woolley. though losing his place, escaped this scrimmage, thanks to the clever maneuvers of Wootton. who. in challenging and beating Snowllight at the distance rode an exceptionally brilliant finish. "The horse Wootton rode in the Portland Plate. Woolley. was highly commended at Xewburv Horse Show in the huners class in 1905. and Mr. Cheeseman. his owner, offered to change with one or Mr. Baylis. a farmer at Eastbury. onlv last winter. One can imagine the feelings of the latter when he heard the result of the Portland Plate. The Portland Plate was vir!h ,.500 to R. C. Dawson, his present owner, who only paid 00 for the horse, buying him Tor a hunter. The Portland Plate Is a semi-English classic and rarelv won by the small owner.
