AERONAUT, SPRINTER, HAS RETIRED. Aeronaut broke down so badly in his race Monday that he will he retired to the stud at the Xew Jersey farm of George F. Johnson. Aeronaut bowed a tendon last year and trainer Tom Mc-Creery has never been able to get him in good shape since. Aeronaut is a five-year-old chestnut horse, by Ayrshire Miss Ellie, by Donovan, and came at the side of his dam when Clarence H. Mackay brought her to Kingston Stud from England in 1902. Aeronaut ran his initial race at Sheeps-head Bay, June 17, 1904, in the name of AA S. Fanshawe. His only winning race as a two-year-old was at Saratoga, when he beat a big field of maidens in easy fashion. Aeronaut passed into the hands of the Johnsons the following spring, and his lirst appearance bearing the scarlet jacket and black cap was at Jamaica, April 29, 1905. He scored the next time out. At Brighton Beach, July 20," he defeated such speedy sprinters as Lady Amelia, Tea cress and Ascension. Aeronaut ran second to Roseben hi the Manhattan Handicap, and followed it by wimiing the Westchester High-weight Handicap from Race King, Incantation, Jocund and other lleet-footed racers. In the Fordliam he finished second to Diamond Flush, but did better when he again beat Race King In the Tamamia Handicap. His first race last year was at Jamaica, April 2S, when he was beaten by Escutcheon. In his next race he easily vanquished Escutcheon. AVes, Edith James and others. During the Belmont Park meeting he won three races, the last two of them being the Crotana Handicap and the Aau Cort-landt. It was in the latter that he made a new track record of 1:2.3 for seven furlongs. Another .notable performance for him . was in the Highweight Handicap at Sheepshead Bay, June 30, when he gave weight to a dozen of the best sprinters of the year and beat them over the six furlongs main course in 1:12, under the impost of 130 pounds. Aeronaut has started six times this year, but was beaten off in all of them, convincing his owner and trainer that it was hopeless to continue him in training, hence his retirement to the stud. The following is a tabulation of his races and money won: . Year. Age. Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. TJnp.
