LADY ESTHER THE WINNER P. M. CIVILLS MARE TAKES HANDICAP FEATURE AT BLUE BONNETS. Cave Adsum. in His First Race This Season. Makes Impressive Appearance — Steeplechase Develops Angle That May Be Investigated. Montreal. Que.. June 9. — Evenly balanced fields produced stirring contests at Blue Bonnets this afternoon, a majority of the winners getting boose first by scant margins. Tlie only winner that was not hard pressed at the finish was Jeanette M. She found it easy to beat the band opposing her in tlie final dash. Favorites and outsiders divided the honors. Sai Volatile. I-ady Esther and Ontario being winning choices. There were three handicaps on the card, one a highweight affair that called for gentlemen riders, another an owners steeplechase handicap and tlie other at a mile and a furlong contested by a small but select field. Tlie track was in tlie same excellent condition that it had been on previous days and fast time was again made. The gentlemen riders race went to Ontario, with Mr. Bert Holland in the saddle. Ontario gave away weight to everything in the race and won with ejuso after making the pace throughout. The steeplechase had a peculiar aspect. There was a betting angle which made it appear as though Wild Refrain was a sure thing. In the early Stages Rig Bear Btade the pace. The favorite. Commodore Fontaine, seemingly lacked speed and finally dropped back to last but one. After completing the first circuit Heider rushed Wild Refrain to the front and. although jumping wretchedly, she assumed an easy lead, which was retained without much effort until the twelfth jump, which she took in such fasliion that she went down in a heap. Commodore Fontaine then took a sudden spurt and Was soon out In front with a two-lengths lead. In the stretch the favorite faltered and Nat B.. finishing gamely tinder the whin, got up in the final strides to beat, him by a head. The stewards evidently were not pleased with the race and it would not be surprising should they require some of those who wagered so heavily on Wild Refrain to tell just what they know about the race. Lady Esther made a runaway affair of the mile and a furlong handicap and won from Cave Adsuin without being put to much effort. The latter was making his first start of the season and looked to ho In superb condition. He will surely iuioiove on this race and it will take a shifty banc to beat him at the next asking.
