- THE SUPERB AMERICAN CHAMPION WHICH COULD NOT START IN ENGLAND h : J JAMES R. KEEKES B. C. 4, COLIH. BY COMMANDO PASTORELLA. The story of Colin is a story of fifteen triumphant races liiidinimed by defeat, and such it will remain. The effort to make further turf history with him in an Eaglish campaign has been abandoned and his future istoibowone of luxurious retirement in the seclusion"of Castleton. He belongs to a vigorous, line of horses and it is not unreasonable to anticipate that before many years pass be will send out sons and daughters to which he will have imparted a generous measure of bis own matchless speed and unflinching courage. He was a great race liorse in every sense of the word. and. in the lpinioa of many who had watched successive generations of thoroughbreds come and go, probably the greatest ever bred in the United States. His sire. Commando, and grandsire. Domino, both died while young horses, and for the good of the American turf it is to be hoped Colin will be spared their fate and live to the lusty old age of his great grandsire, Himyar. As has long been the fashion with Keene horses. Colin was introduced to racing in a race for a purse, and after that won in succession the National Stallion rate. Eclipse Stakes, Great Trial Stakes. Brighton Junior Stakes. Saratoga Special. Grand Union Hotel Stakes. Futurity. Flatbush Stakes, colts part of the .Brighton Produce Stakes, colts part of the Matron Stakes and the Champagne Stakes. Coming out in grand form as a three-year-old he won the Withers Stakes and Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park and the Tidal Stakes at Sheeps-head Bay. While in preparation to run in the Coney Island Jockey Club Stakes he fell lame and has never since started iu a race. It was hoped that a long rest and assiduous care might cure his injury, and it was In this hope that ho was sen rto England. There, so long as not asked togouttop speedrihft -worked so well without showing- lameness that there appeared to be a bright prospect of his resuming racing. But one day after a trial for speed with some of the fast sprinters in Sam Darlings big stable, in which he. ran away from them, he fell lame again and Ills case was regretfully pronounced hopeless, after a careful veterinary examination. While the Ascot meeting was in progress last June. Colin was exhibited in the paddock and greatly admired by a critically inspecting crowd of good judges of good horses, of which King Edward did not hesitate to become one. It is understood that he will be mated with a number of select English mares for English owners before being brought home next year, and it is quite certain the English turf will not suffer from the acquisition of some representatives of that strong line which runs back through Colin Commando, Domino, Himyar. Alarm and Eclipse, to the Epsom Derby winner, Orlando. Colin is the third greatest money winner of American turf history, ranking next to Domino and Sysonhy. It is a feature of the remarkable success of James 11. Keene on -the turf that all three of these were his property and achieved their great victories iu his behalf.
