GETAWAY DAY AT BLUE BONNETS. Montreal Meeting Closes with Banner Attendance in History of Racing in That Locality. Montreal, Que.. September IS. Getaway day for this season at Blue Bonnets will in future be remembered as the banner one in the history of the track in the matter of attendance up to date. Every available space of the commodious plant served some one as a vantage point from which to witness the racing. The clubhouse was taxed to its utmost with Montreals elite. Ideal racing weather prevailed and served to enhance the sport. Judging by the enthusiasm displayed during the afternoon Montreal can safely be reckoned as a future haven for the thoroughbred, and as long -as high-class racing is maintained the sport will always have the support of the best element here. The past fortnight has afforded a good test relative to racing in this section, and the large daily crowds have afforded ample proof that the sport is well liked. Financially the meeting has come up to the managements expectations. Todays card in its original state was a splendid offering; but bad track conditions brought about wholesale withdrawals and several surprises in the defeats of the bpst.backed horses. Scratches were especially plentiful in the feature races, the Cham-plain Stakes at one mile being contested for bv only four starters and the steeplechase over the short course by three. P. T. Chinns Great Heavens was returned winner in the stake in handy style, much to the chagrin of those who had placed their confidence in .Martin Doyle and installed him favorite. Great Heavens showing today was in marked contrast to his previous performance. Martin Doyle encouraged his backers for nearly three-quarters by remaining in a contending position, but when called on in the stretch faded away. Royal Onyx and Old Honesty fought it out for the minor portions of the purse. Lizzie Flat. Ballycastle and G. Ferraro were left to go in the chase. They ran closely grouped until the fifth hedge, where G. Ferraro made a bad landing. Ballycastle then assumed a commanding lead and appeared a certain winner approaching the last jump, where be was fully twenty lengths in front of Lizzie Flat. Overconfidence, however, on the part of his rider led to the falling of the horse and Lizzie Flat came into an unexpected victory. Ballycastle was remounted by William Bradv. a stable hand, and galloped to the finish, which earned him seeond place. Ballycastle was bleeding profusely from a cut in his breast, probably sustained in striking the last fence. Jockey Rae was severely shaken by his fall and had to be conveyed to the jockeys quarters in a carriage. The third race held out considerable local interest pn account of the starters being locally owned and bred in the Province of Quebec. Larente. owned by C. b. Campbell, proved the winner. The race was marred somewhat by the winner bolting soon after the start and impeding Tory Walton, forcing the latter to pull up. The winner is a likelv-Iooking youngster and will be a candidate for the Kings Plate to be run next year. In addition to winning the purse. Air. Campbell will receive from the government of the Province of Quebec 25 for breeding the winner and 50 for having bred the second horse. Kilo gets 5 from the government and Tory Walton 0, the latter having cantered around the course and being officially placed fourth. Poconioke was best in the opener and. after indulging Woolstone to the stretch, came away to a cantering victory. The erratic Carthage was in a running mood today and spreadeagled a poor band in the sixth race. The closing dash went to Oberon in a sharp drive to down Olive Ely. the favorite. Nearly all the horsemen and turf followers who stayed for the closing day will go tonight by special trains to Toronto.
