. SUMMARIZED RESULTS OF YEARLING SALES. Get of Adam Brought Best Average of Season, with 1 is Watercress Second and Hamburg Third. P ti r Lexington, Ky., September 18. Whenever an aver- li age of 00 per head for yearlings can be obtained v through competitive bidding, the state of the mar- a ket for thoroughbred horses can be considered v healthy. This year 470 yearlings from Kentucky, v Virginia, Tennessee aud California went through the sales ring at Sheepshead Bay and they brought I an aggregate of 39,990, representing an average s of 00.30. The sales for the, July period numbered 1 21S head for 14,195, an average of 524, and for i the September period. 250 head for 2u,795, avcrag- 1 ing 90, or only 4 less than the average for the midsummer sale, which has . the pick of the crop. 3 The fall sale, everything considered, was an ,1m- provement on the midsummer sale and on account 1 of it the breeders have been greatly encouraged. 1 Tliey all regard the future as bright. I The highest price of the year was ,000, paid 1 by John Dyment. the young Canadian, for the bay : sou of Adam and Roman Gold, a good daughter of Gold Lace, by Ormonde, bred by W. .OB, Mac- I donough of California. The bay filly by Adam, out of Ellangowan, was sold by Messrs. G. II. and T. : .1. Clay to Franklin C. Bishop of the Newcastle . Stable and Millstream Stud for ,000, but not i through the sales ring. The negotiations were con- I ducted privately. Should, this ,000 transaction be Included in the statistics of the auction sales. It 1 would bring the average" to 15.75, an Increase of nearly 0. The next highest price, ,100. is also" -to the credit of Adam, his son, from Grace Gum- berts, having been knocked down to J. A. Bonnet at 1 that figure. Three colts were" sold for ,100 each, and one for ,000. One filly brought ,900. another .S00; one colt was sold for ,S00, another for : ,700, and two others for ,000 each. There were i thirteen colts and fillies that brought from ,000 to ,500 each. I The yearlings sold were the get of ninety-seven stallions, tlfty-three of which are American-bred and forty-four imported. The gqt of the French . stallion Adam, which after two seasons-at the Mill- stream Stud was sent back to his native heath and sold for S,000, some 5,000 or more than he cost the Millstream people, were most in demand, as ; will be seen from the table of aggregates and averages glveu below. The Millstream people profited considerably by their ownership, of Adam, but it is a pity that they could not have been sufficiently far-sighted to keep him hero. That he would be in big demand in America henceforth goes without saying. The following tabulation of the results attained at this sdason.s sales contains much of interest to breeders in particular and turfmen in general: Sire. Colts. Fillies. Total. Average.
