ATTRACTIONS OF THE LAT0NIA MEETING. Many Crack Three -Year -Olds in the Derby — Other Closed Events to Be Run. Latonia. Ky.. June 3. — On Saturday, June 17. at the Latonia track the last of the three great races of the Kentucky season, which have 0,000 in added money, will be run. This event is the La-tonia Derby for three-year-olds at one mile and a half. The meeting at Latonia begins on Wednesday, June 14. and comes to a close on Tuesday, June 11.-a racing i eriod of twenty -four days. This covers the Fourth of July and. in addition to this holiday. there are four Saturdays of racing at Latonia. This makes it possible for lovers of the sport throughout Kentucky. Ohio and other nearby states to see mueh racing at this great plant, as many of these patrons can only avail themselves of its enjoyments on Saturdays and holidays. I-itouia has, under the management of John Hachineister, won its way as the leading race track all around of Kentucky. That is, it would be possible to hold a longer meeting any year at this ;rack and maintain it throughout with assured success. Ittonia is in touch with the chain of cities outside of its neighboring towns, a number of which people ran come from and get home even after the races for a late sup]K-r. Other* are not near a days ride even from the track. These embrace Louisville. Columbus. Dayton. Toledo, Detroit, Pittsburgh. St. Isolds, Chicago and Indianapolis, to say nothing of such smaller cities as Lexington, Z.iiios. ille, Youngstowii, Hamilton, Chillleothe, ifae-sillon. Marietta, Mansfield. Lancaster, Portsmouth, Piqua. Steubenville. Tiffin and Warren. i Among the prominent three-year-olds now being pointed for the big Latonia event are: George Smith, winner of the recent Kentucky Derby; Hig Smoke, which won the Fort Thomus Handicap last year: Blind Rnggagc. the three-year-old star of K. R. Bradleys stable: Franklin, which ran third in the Kentucky Derby; Dodge, his stable com-paion, that finished fourth in that race; Blackie Daw. winner of the Cincinnati Trophy last year; Hulse. which won five of his six starts as a two-year-old last year, including the Harold Stakes at Latonia: Colonel Vennie. the crack three-year-old of J. Livingstons stable: Mandy Hamilton, the winner of the Ashland Oaks at Lexington; Old Koenig. which has boon racing fast this spring at Louisville in sprint races; Ellison, winner of the Rashford Manor Stakes last year, and Diek Williams, which has shown better than any three-year-old in the Schorr stable since Star Charter raced at that age. 11. P. Whitney has no less than eight nominations in the latonia Derby this year and it is probable that one of his three great horse at least of this age Dominant. Thunderer or Bromo--will be sent fr m the east to the Latonia track to run in the race. I During the coming twenty-four days racing at the Latonia track there are eight other stake races down for decision. The first of these, the Inaugural Handicap, with ,000 added, is the • I ■ I • t ■ - i t • t • • ; feature of the opening day of the meeting, Wednesday, i There are no less than four two-year-old stakes on the meetings card, those embracing the Cincinnati Trophy, with ,000 added, the richest race for two-year-olds run annually on the Kentucky circuit tracks, and which will be decided this year on Saturday, July 8. In addition to the first money In this event, the owner of the winner will receive a handsome trophy, called the Cincinnati Trophy Loving Cup, which is of solid silver lined with gold and manaufactured at a cost to the Latonia Jockey Club of more than 00. The other two-year-old stakes are the Clipsetta. Harold and Valuation stakes. The last-nam-d raced has ,500 in added money and to each of the former events ,000 is added. The latter two races have a history as old as the Latonia track. The big feature race of the national holiday, Tuesday. July 4. is the Independence Handicap with ,500 added, which, with the exception of the Kentucky Handicap, is the richest race for three-year-olds and over run i:i Kentucky. The other stake races of the meeting are the Quickstep Handicap, with ,000 added, and the Merchants Stakes, with ,500 added. There will be no purse during the coming Latonia meeting of less than 1916.sh00 and the special purse vents and overnight handicaps, on the card from day to day. will exceed this amount. With a day between the close of the meeting now on at Douglas Park and the opening at Latonia, manager Hachineister will have an abundance of time to reach his office at the latter course early oa the Tuesday morning before the opening.
