ED CRUMPS FINE VICTORY WINS KENTUCKY HANDICAP FROM R0AMER IN A THRILLING FINISH. Roamer Runs a Grand Race Under His Heavy Impost but Borrow Proves a Failure — Vast Crowd Views the Race. Louisville. Ky.. June 3. — Douglas Park was never before called on to entertain a greater or more representative crowd than that in attendance this afternoon. Conditions for the sport were ideal. The big crowd began wending its way to the course shortly after the noon hour with a view to securing suitable vantage points. The huge grand stand was filled in jig time and the overflow had to be content with the places on the stairs of the grand stand, its lawns and the sweeping greens adjacent to the paddock. The betting was spirited throughout the afternoon and. for the accommodation of those desirous of betting on the big race, three advance mutuel liooths were operated. It releived the congestion on the race greatly. While the big race absorbed most attention, the other races w re not lacking in interest for the big throng and the w inners on each occasion came in for a generous share of applause. The rich Kentucky Handicap was placed to the credit of John W. Schorr for the second time when Ed Crump, carrying 121 pounds and ridden by jockey Guy Garner, under a desperate drive succeeded in outstaying Andrew Millers Roamer, with Water Witch third and Hodge fourth. The others were fairly well strung out near the end. The race was worth 1,050 net to the winner, while Ro: mer gets ,500 and Water Witch 1916.sh00. and by landing in fourth place Hodge saves his stakes of 00. Luke McLuke placed this rich race to John W. Schorrs credit two years ago. Last seasons winner. Horrow, was a starter in todays race, but made an unexoptedly bad showing in the last quarter, up to which point he loomed up like the probable winner. Roamer was by no means disgraced, for he carried his burden of 132 pounds in game style and his defeat might be attributable to a lack of thorough condition, a circumstance that his trainer feared and expressed himself about before the race. The winner showed a grand performance and was ridden with good judgment. He was kept well up during the early running and his final drive was timed to a nicety. In the early racing Marion Goosby, Old Koenig and Borrow had dominated the running with Hutwell making every effort to reserve Roamer as much us possible and at the same time keep close to the lenders. He freed him from sharp testraint when Borrow shortened his stride just after rounding the lower turn, and at this point it looked as if Roamer would win. for he was in front and apparently going freely. Just as they rounded into the stretch iarner called on Ed Crump and he quickly loomed up menacingly. For a brief period it seemed as if he would fail to overtake the loader, but in the last sixteenth it became appar -nt that barring an unforseen mishap he would forge into the load. Roamer made a game effort to respond to the strong urging of his rider, but in the last seventy-yards Kd Crump got his head in front and drew out to win by a half length. Water Witch, always close up after going the first quarter, held on well and easily outstayed Hodge. The latter had acted fractiously at the post and was away none too well. The showing of Royal II. was good, considering he was in a jam in the earily racing. Borrows race during the last three-eighths was particularly disapi»ointing. For three-quarters he appeared as a ceitain contender at the finish. Dick Williams had much bad luck in the race, as did Waterblossom. which was away poorly and could n ver show to advantage in the running. The winner was greeted by loud acclaim, for. after all, the crowd was partial to a western victory. Work-outs over a fast track this morning wee: Bourbon Lass — Five -eighths in 1:03.
