CURRENT NOTES OF THE TURF. L. H. Baxter has arrived at Belmont Park from Havana with Sal Vanity. Crimper is one of the latest victims of the coughing epidemic that is sweeping through the Long Island stables. Indicative of the general prevalence of the coughing complaint among the horses at Belmont Park is the statement that twenty -eight of Mr. Belmonts thirty are more or less affected. Johnny Reiff, a famous California jockey, who rode in France in recent years, was a visitor at the Tijuana races recently. It is rciiorteil that Reiff may liecome interested iu some manner at the course. M. L. and Charles Schwartz are rejiorted to have paid John E. Madden about 0,000 for the two-year-old colt Sortie. This youngster is a son of Watercress and Enterprise that was purchased by Mr. Madden out of the Haggin sale for ,000. It is said that Star Hawks first appearance in public in the east will be on the opening day of the Aqueduct meeting, June 24. the race being the Brooklyn Handicap at a mile and an eighth. It is stated that he is being pointed for this event, to which George Smith is also an eligible. J. Temple Gwathmey, former president of the New York Cotton Exchange, was married in War-renton. Va.. Thursday, to Miss Virginia Day Sinter. Mr. Gwathmey. who retired from active affairs several years ago. is building a home in Warren -ton. where he and his wife will live. He is sharply intersted in racing on the jumping side of the sport and is establishing a select stud and track at Warrcnton. Early Wright and the sixteen Wingficld horses which he brought from Kentucky took their stalls at the track yesterday. They all shipped well and will be ready to race within a day or two. Early brings the news that some of the biggest stables east of the Ro kics are planning to come here for the next meeting. John W.
