NOTES OF THE TURF FROM OTHER LANDS. II. Marsh, the jockey, who accepted an engagement to ride in Spain this season, has left Newmarket for that country. Not since 1914 had the Duke of Portlands colors been carried to victory until Ajaccio won the Milden-hall Plate at Newmarket recently. The two sons of the Newmarket trainer, John Dawson, hold commissions in the army and are on active service. One of them has been taken prisoner in a recent engagement. Mrs. J. B. Joel, to whom Sirian was presented last year, has restored the colt to her husband as she finds herself too engrossed by her Red Cross work to take interest in racing. George Parfrcinent. the well-known French crosscountry jockey, will ride at the big meeting at San Sebastian. Spain. larfrement has taken out a license to ride under the Rules of Racing. Mr. W. J. Tatem, who won the Winchester Handicap at Windsor with The Revenge, generously presented the value of the race ,185 to the Star and Garter Fund for soldiers and sailors disabled in the war. W. Earl, who had been engaged to ride Ali Bey in the Two Thousand Guineas and Popingaol in the One Thousand, dislocated his hip through the falling of Baronvale at Newbury, and other arrangements had to lie made. Marcianus. which defeated Sandmole. Wrack, Buskin and others in the Norwich Handicap at Newmarket last October, has been sold to Mr. A. F. S. Jackson for India. Other horses that Mr. Jackson has recently bought are Aqua Solis, Langwhang and Abordare. Ten two-year-olds have lx en shipped to Santos, Brazil, for racing purposes in Rio de Janiero and San Paulo by Mr. Martin Maddock. The youngsters consist of eight colts by St. Martin. Cherry Tree. Marcovil. Lycaon. Rhodesian and Karla Mor, and two fillies by Kings Im tor and Bridge of Allan. F. Rickaby rode the winner of the One Thousand Guineas for the second year in succession when Canvon proved too good for a better favorite in Fifinella. Rickaby having figured as the successful jockey when Vaueluse won the race twelve months ago. Rickaby, Sr., father of the Stanley House jockey, rode Mimi, the winner of the One Thousand in 1891. Cvlgad has made a most auspicious start at the stud, the first two-year-old by the Newmarket Stakes winner to go to the post turning out a winner. This was the well-grown colt Publican, which defeated a more fancied youngster in the Dark Dinah colt for the Manton Two-Year-Old Stakes. Publican is a partnership horse, and gives promise of being of great service to his trainer. 11. S. Persse, whose name and colors the colt ran in.
