A. J. JOYNER S GROWING ESTABLISHMENT. New York. June 3.— From a modest beginning. A. J. Joyner is getting together a rather formidable string. When he first took possession of a stable at Belmont Park he had five thoroughbreds iHlonging to George 1. Widener. Jr. They were all by the once-famous race horse. Garry Herrmann. and included Lady Hillington. Dovedale. Columbine and two more two-year-olds — a brown gelding out of Ambrosia, and a brown gelding out of Dove ote. Then came the sale of the Duryeu thoroughbreds. and two fillies fell to bids made by Joyner. These were the bav filly Farce, two years old. by Rire aux Urines Armenia, and the brown or bay filly Teetotal, by Irish I,nil— Teetotum. It now transpires that these fillies were lx.ught for George I. Widener. Jr.. so that his present active string of flat racers numbers seven. Joyner also bought two colts at the Dm yea sale, but these were not for Mr Widener. Thev were the brown or black colt, two vears old. Muckross. by Irish Lad— Stillwater, bv Sir Dixon, and the bay two-year-old colt Killa-dar. by Irish Lad— Ascot Belle. These two high-priced and richly-bred good-looking cits were bought for M. L. Schwartz, and they are now in the Jovuer stable. This looked like a rather good beginning for Mr. Schwartz in the way of two-year-olds, but yesterday another two-year -old colt, which had been purchased by Mr. Schwartz, was transferred to the Jovner stable. This was the slashing big chestnut colt Sortie, by Watercress out of Enternrise. by Bathamptoii. Sortie is a large and rangv cl.lt of fine substance, and he is of exceptionally high finish for a son of Watercress his quarters having that peculiarity attractive and graceful outline which would suggest Star Shoot or McOee for his sire, rather than the almost gigantic Watercress. He is entered for the Epsom Derby of 1917. In addition to the thoroughbreds already mentioned, trainer Jovner has in his stable three valuable two year olds belonging to Thomas F. Ryan. These are two law and promising looking chestnut fillies bv Sea King son of Persimmon I. MM out of Belle Nelson and the other out of Fairy Bird, and a big chestnut colt by Sea King Mumni.
