PONY EXPRESS NARROWLY Beats Susiana by Small Margin in Ocean Bound Handicap Equator and Spods In Spectacular Finish Fridays Havana Ileccipts to Family Familyof of Late Victor 31unuz HAVANA Cuba March 23 Todays pro ¬ gram at Oriental Park was huilt around the Ocean Bound Handicap a dash of five and a half furlongs for threeyearolds A small but wellmatched field went to the post and the race furnished a good contest in which Pony Kxpress beat Susiana by the smallest of margins The Cubanbred Frank S by the All Gold stallion Solomon smothered the others for speed the early part of the con ¬ test Tie set a fast pace and drew away four lengths in the lead but in the stretch Susiana and Pony Express passed him When it came to the drive Walls outrode Sutton and this was in tiie main responsible for Pony Ex ¬ press victory Wild Cat was a fastclosing third thirdIt It was the tightest sort of a fit between Equator and Spods in the fourth with the winner in doubt until the official placing was displayed Whispering dashed to the front when the start came and set a fast pace to the stretch turn where Spods moved up At the sixteenth post Spods looked like the winner but tired when the final test came and Equator just beat him Colossus which finished fourth ran as if the best but was the victim of a bad ride rideMachine Machine Gunner finally made good after several disappointments when he came from belli IK in the stretch to win the first race by half a length from Bab The latter showed the most early speed and had two lengths advantage entering the homestretch but tired badly at the end Two Eyes was third The others were pretty well strung out out3IAXXCHKX 3IAXXCHKX MY A XECK XECKMannchen Mannchen had to stand a long hard stretch drive to win the second race and beat First Pullet by a neck The latter was rather slow to get going but Banks saved ground with her to the stretch turn where she came around the leaders at the end and was gradually wearing down the winner Gray Bonnet was outrun from the start She tired and was eased up upSun Sun Turret and Charles Whitney staged a grueling stretch drive in the third and when the final test came the former proved the better and got the decision by a head Haran was the pacemaker and drew away in the early stages and held a comfortable lead to the turn but began to tire at the finish finishFrank Frank Shannon was the clever winner of the sixth in which he beat Bob Giles by half a length Yerrat waited until well around the far turn before making his challenge and when called on Frank Shannon moved up on the outside with a rush was restrained at the eighth post but had to be shaken up a bit at the end to stall off Bob Giles which came again againThomas Thomas Monahan president of the Cuba American Jockey Club who has been visiting in Havana the greater part of the winter leaves on the Orizaba Saturday morning for his home in New York He will be accom ¬ panied by V E Gonzales former ambassa ¬ dor to Peru PeruViolet Violet Mersereau the threeyearold Short Grass filly belonging to O Yzquerido which threw her stifle in a race last Sunday was reported in a bad way and may have to be destroyed destroyedThe The gate receipts at Oriental Park this afternoon were set aside for the fund which is being raised in Havana for the family of the late Victor Munoz a wellknown news ¬ paper man who for many years was the sporting editor of the Havana Daily El Mundo 1 S Cosden and a party of friends were clubhouse visitors Mr Cosden made the trip from Key West by hydroplane and will remain for the remainder of the meeting
