Twenty Years Ago Today Chief Turf Events of March 24 1903 Racing at Washington Little Rock and Oak ¬ land The feature of chief importance at Clinton Park Little Rock last Sunday was the work of Barca T H Stevens Derby candidate Car ¬ rying about his Derby weight he worked the mile in 145 with Mr Stevens waving his hat at the boy through thz last furlong to pull up This is by far the best Derby workout at Clinton Park this spring D H Barnes of Chicago who will superin ¬ tend the building of the Kansas City Jockey Clubs new race track has arrived on the ground He will be there probably all sum ¬ mer Mr Barnes is enthusiastic about the new track He says that the site is naturally one of the best he has ever seen and that he be ¬ lieves that the track wh whn n finished will not only be one of the best appointed in the coun ¬ try but also one of the prettiest prettiestAt At Little Rock it looked as though jockey Fuller intended to make a clean sweep of the card when he rode the winners of the first and second races In the third race however his mount just faibd in the closing strides after coming from last place to snatch the victory Sam Houston was the winner here and Fullers mount The Elba started slowly but closed a tremendous gap and surely would have beaten Sam Houston in a few more strides stridesJ J R Keenes threeyearold chsstnut colt Gimcrack and W C Whitneys threeyearold filly Girdle winner of the great Filly Stakes at Sheepshead Bay last fall have been de ¬ clared from the Metropolitan Handicap Both were down to carry 96 pounds These will probably be the last declarations from the race unless some come from the West The follow ¬ ing named horses have been declared out of the Carter Handicap to be run at Aqueduct The Regent Knight of Gold Money Muss and Con ¬ tend Peter J was a mighty lucky horse to win the daily handicap at Oakland He escaped the interference that all the other starters in this race were subjected to and jockey Bonner gave him a skillful ride Tower of Candles was expected to win this race but got away to a bad start and ran much below her true form to finish absolutely last Dainty which took third money was badly messed about and swerved all over the track during the runnin of the race but displayed brilliant speed to get up in time to outstay Glendenning by a head Money Muss took the place money and also escaped much interference interferenceBenning Benning offered nothing in the way of a feature attraction today but the racing was formful four of the six races being won by favorites Mezzo furnished a surprise in the fourth race a seveneighths dash for maiden threeyearolds and over winning at odds of 30 to 1 A poor banJ of racers went to the post here and the betting public was all at sea in regard to the ultimate winner finally settling on Prancer from the Haas Stable as the best of a bad lot Prancer flattered his backers by running up in front all the way but tired at tb2 end and Mezzo and Wheeler B outlasted him to take first and second money re ¬ spectively
