L ROSS COLORS • Deep Thought and Golden Rule 1 Carry Them to Victory. % Montreal Turfmans Pair Finish First and Second in Connaught Cup Handicap. • TORONTO, Ont., May 22.— Renewal of the Connaught Cup Handicap for the eleventh time featured this day of racing at Woodbine Park under the auspices of the Ontario Jockey Club. Six contested at a mile and a sixteenth for the ,000 added stakes, worth ,505 to the winner. Commander J. K. L. Ross, who won the Challenge Cup with Boniface in 1920. and with Baby Grand in 1922. ran the favorites for the 1924 renewal in Golden Rule and Deep Thought and declared to win with the latter. Deep Thought won well under restraint by six lengths, with his stablemate second, a length in front of Royal Visitor, an added starter from the Giddings barn. Redstone, | Brilliant Jester, another added starter, and Van Patrick completed the procession past the finish. The start was good, although Van Patrick propped when the barrier went up. Redstone got off in front and showed the way to the first turn. Scobie, astride Deep Thought, took a position behind the Seagram color bearer. P. Walls placed Golden Rule next to his stablemate in the procession around the first turn and through the back stretch. Beginning the far turn Scobie sent the ; three-year-olds son of Transvaal, with his . I 109 pounds, after the pacemaker. For a few j strides they battled for the lead and then Deep Thought went to the front, never to be threatened thereafter. Walls moved past Redstone behind his stable companion easily, but at the end sent the Wrack colt along to save second place by a full length. ADMIRER BY A *ECK. Admirer got home a neck in front of Par-thema in the opening race, the first division of the Alexandra Plato, at three-quarters. Little Black Sheep beat four others. Par-j thema went to the front from the start with Little Black Sheep in closest pursuit. On the turn Romanelli guided Admirer around the two leaders and wore down Parthema in a long drive, in which there was considerable bumping. Mrs. T. J. Donohue owns the winner. The Lionheart Steeplechase turned out to j ! be a two-horse race, although the card I showed four went to the post. Rocking Horse made the pace through the two miles and easily held Flying Frog safe. W. Hunt I rode the winner. Altar Fire could not get close to the leaders at any time. Own Roe ONeil fell at the first jump and broke his left hind leg just above the ankle. H. P. Whitneys Toppanite won by a length from Traymore in the Patricia Plate, at five- eighths. Five two-year-olds made up the field. Fiery Flight finished third ahead of Tamarind and Sunborn. Maddens Stage Coach won by a length from Wraith in a whipping finish, with Speedy Girl ahead of the others in a field of seven. Ablaze began in front, but Wraith passed her on the turn and led until the last few jumps. Stage Coach, in close pursuit of the pacemaker, wore him down in the stretch and won going away. L. Lang rode the winner. Maiden riders received the call in the Iroquois Plate, fifth on the card. They were mounted on Canadian-breds. M. Green rode Leaside, the winner. Lord Marcus made the pace and finished second. War Tank got third money. Green kept Leaside, a slow beginner, close to the pacemaker and slipped through on the inside of Lord Marcus in the final sixteenth, winning by a neck, Comme Ci got up in the stretch and won by a nose from Servitor in the final race. Beth Hodder beat the others. Ambrose piloted the winner. He rated him behind Servitor early, took the lead in the final eighth and kept the W. E. Martin gelding going just long enough to win. Robinson and Heath, 32 Front Street West, Toronto, have been appointed customs brok-t ers for the Thorncliffe Park Association, and will issue bonds with authority upon cancel-i lations of bonds by the Ontario Jockey Club, horsemen were informed in a notice posted today. J. P. Smith will ship Henry Dattner to Belmont Park in care of J. J. Murphy at the conclusion of the meeting here, W. Irvine will split the K F. Whitney stable, sending a part to Ottawa and the remainder to Blue P.onnets. The B*orval and Blue Bonnets books were distributed among horsemen today, Maternal Pride, winner of the Kings Plate, will be shipped to Ottawa to run in the Canadian-bred races at that point. F. Sharpe will go to Maple Heights to ride Deputy, J. McMillens candidate for the Ohio State Derby. G. E, Phillips will campaign the Canadian division of the J. F. McMilleu stable at Ottawa. L. Morris, who suff red severe injury to one of his feet astride Golden Sphere at the Pimlico opening, arrived here today. He is carrying a cane, but expects to be able 1 to resume riding at Ottawa. John F. Ryan, manager of the Canadian l Breeding Bureau, is a visitor from Montreal. R. McKeever will ship from here to Ottawa.
