I i J j : | RETURN RACE FOR EPINARD Supporters of French Colt Are Anxious for Another Match With Sir GaUahad in. PARIS, France. May 22.— The British friends of Epinard, dissatisfied with the result of the race, in which the pride of the French turf was defeated by Sir Gallahad III., have offered to back the son of Badajoz to the extent of half a million francs in a return race against his rival over the same distance and with identical weight conditions, with the exception that the race be run on a straightaway course. They have obtained ! , the consent of Pierre Wertheimer, owner of I Epinard, on condition that it take place before June 5, as Epinard will be taken to Ascot about June 10 for the Gold Cup event. Captain Jefferson Davis Cohn, owner of Sir Gallahad III., reserved decision pending a consultation with trainer Denman at Chan-tilly. "This race will do my horse good," M. i Wertheimer said. "I cant help thinking he I was still a little short on condition and a I ] little overweight." Sir Gallahad III. returned to Chantilly and I I was received like a conquering hero. The j I town band turned out for the occasion and the crowd cheered heartily. All the sporting writers in Taris papers I sound the praises of Frank ONeill for his ride on Sir Gallahad HI. against Everett Haynes and are a unit in opinion that ONeill would have reversed the decision had he I j [been riding Epinard.
