FIFTY-SIXTH RUNNING OF BELMONT STAKES J , » ONE OF OLDEST AMERICAN RACING FIXTURES TO BE RUN TODAY ■ ♦ Ten High-Class and Well-Matched Three-Year-Olds Named to Strive in 0,000 Prize— Mad Play, Sheridan, Samaritan, Modest, Aga Khan and Beau Butler Expected to Figure Prominently in Noted Race • The third of the 0,000 added stake features of the spring racing season will be decided this afternoon. The first was the Preakness Stakes, run at Pimlico and won by Nellie Morse; the second the Kentucky Derby, in which Black Gold scored a notable triumph. Today the 0,000 Belmont Stakes will be run at the palatial home of the Westchester Racing Association. The Belmont Stakes is one of the oldest of American stake fixtures, dating back to 1867, and its history is replete with the noble equine heroes and heroines of other days of the turf. For the fifty-sixth running of the Belmont Stakes a representative field of the foremost three-year-oids of the year is named to strive for the rich prize and the glory of winning such a great race. On the eve of the race the Rancocas Stable pair, Mad Play and Sheridan, rule favorite, though none of the prospective starters will lack supporters when they answer the bugle call this afternoon. H. P. Whitney will be represented by Klondyke and the Sanford stable has great hopes in the prowess of Samaritan, the English-bred colt, a son of Grand Parade — Red Cross IV. E. B. McLean has sent his Cclin colt Modest to try for the prize and Benjamin Blocks colors will be seen for the last time before his sale of horses prior to his departure abroad when Thorndale carries his silks today. E. R. Bradleys faith in Beau Butler was not shaken by his defeat in the Kentucky Derby and the master of Idle Hour Farm believes that this good son of Black Toney may furnish a big surprise in the Belmont Stakes.
