FINAL DAY AT BOWIE ! Big Crowd on Hand for Closing Program of Meeting. • Red Wingfield and Everglade, Carrying Mrs. A. Swenkes Colors, Win Features. BOWIE. Md.. April 13.— The eleven days meeting of the Southern Maryland Associa- i tion at Bowie came to a close with the Easter j , Monday sport and it was a thoroughly interesting i program that was offered. The . . weather was of summer warmth and a tremendous crowd was out for the occasion. Tomorrow is an off-day and Wednesday the I i racing moves over to Havre de Grace track of the Harford Association, with the Harford Handicap as the big feature of the day. The test offering for the closing day of i the Bowie meeting was the Easter M inday ] i Handicap of a mile and seventy yards and it brought about a great contest when Mrs. A. Swenkes Red Wingfield, under a masterly ride by Harry Stutts, was just home winner from J. EL Shreves Thomasine. with R. J. Murphys Thimble in third place and heating Setting Sun. the only other starter. This race completed a double for the] i Swenke silks and a double for Stutts, for in the preceding contest he had brought Everglade home the winner. No time was lost at the barrier in the . Easter Monday Handicap and the start was excellent. Stutts had Red Wingfield away | quickly and he was first to show in front, i ; but Thomasine. leaving from the outside ■ | position, was rushed by little O. Brown and she went right along with the Swenke campaigner, but little Brown could not keep the filly in going around the first turn, but even with that handicap she rounded into the back stretch right with Red Wingfield and she was hanging to him stride for stride. The pair of them had drawn out five lengths before the others and it had narrowed to a two-horse race. WINNER BY A HEAD. Going to the stretch turn Brown went to the whip and as he did so, he dropped Thorn- i asines head and the filly was at a great handicap. She still fought along with great I | gameness but Stutts had saved ground with ■ 1 Red Wingfield and though the son of Superman was tiring badly a superb ride kept him going to land him winner by a head. The companion piece to the Easter Monday I j Handicap was the Dome Claiming Handicap i j of three-quarters and Mrs. A. Swenkes Everglade was rather a handy winner from F. I Classens Lady Glassen with Jack Richardsons Hoot Mon only beaten a head for second place and R. T. .Wilsons Hidalgo was, a close fourth. The only other starters were j i Freedoms Call and Tod Renesor. and they I were both badly outrun. Lady Glassen was i the one to show the way in the early stages ; with Hoot Mon and Everglade following her. j Hidalgo was just a bit slow leaving the : barrier but he soon found his way to a place : not far back of the leaders. Stutts waited patiently with Everglade . until the top of the stretch and there when, I ! I ady Glassen showed signs of tiring he roused Everglade and the son of Everest I i ] moved away until he was clear to come on i and win by a length and a half. The next | three were closely lapped and the struggle for second place was exciting. I,ady Glassrn just lasting to save that part of the purse from Hoot Mon and the fast finishing Hidalgo. ■ AUKKD BY CROWDING. The opening half mile dash for maiden two-year-olds was marred by a good deal of M crowding just after the barrier arose, in l] j which Janetta. Lady Chilton and Virginias I Choice were all knocked out of the running. ■j I K. K. Brysons Geo. Ray. one of the out-1 I siders, came over and escaped all this interference I and he was home the winner, beating R. W. Carters Cozy and Princess Apple, another carrying the Carter silks, was third. Cozy and Princess Apple were not hurt by r the early crowding and they, with Geo. . Ray, were the ones to cut out all the running. - Then, through the stretch the colt » readily outgamed the fillies to draw out and win by a couple of lengths. Cozy only beat her stablemate a neck, and W. J. Salmons . Iemnos was fourth. Janetta was effectually put out of the running by the crowding at I the start that she was eased up by Mc-Auliffe and finished lengths back of the . others. Sam I ouis Wild Goose was an easy winner . of the six and a half furlongs of the second j race when he led home Pole Star, with Play r On saving third from Jingle. In this contest t Wild loose was good enough to be rated ji along in front practically all the way and J he still had enough left at the head of the J stretch to draw out into a good lead in the last eighth. Play On and Pole Star alternated J in second place through the running but it was Pole Star that had more left when I J the pinch came at the end. It was a cheap field and the others were never contenders. Continued on twelfth pace. FINAL DAMT BOWIE Continued from first page F. P. Robies Lieutenant Farrell proved best of the platers that met in the six and a half furlongs of the third race and after avoiding the early pace he finished with a rush in the stretch to be home winner by three lengths from Mrs. A. Swenkes Hidden Jewel, which in turn just saved Meoad place from Neptune by a head. Hidden Jewel and Neptune were the ones to cut out the running while Lieutenant Farrell was rated along back of the pair of them and Bt Michael followed not far away. When the stretch was reached Neptune had headed Hidden Jewel but at the same time Fisher moved with Lieutenant Farrell and through the last eighth he readily raced over the pair of them. St. Michael was going fast at the end with the result that while he was only fourth he was well lapped on Hidden Jewel and Neptune.
