CLUB STEAK VICTRESS IN ABERDEEN STAKES Handsome Daughter of Meridian-Stake and Cap Displays High Quality • Proves Easily Best of Good Juveniles Mustered Against Her — H. G. Bedwell Scores Triple Success With Cudgeller, Foreland and Senator Norris » HAVRE DR CRACK. Md.. April 17.— Club Steak, the handsome daughter of Meridian and Stake and Cap, which races for J. P. Jones was an easy winner of the four and a half furlongs Aberdeen Stakes this afternoon. It was the feature of a remarkable holiday card and was worth 1,050 to the winner. Club Steak left no doubt of her high quality, by her commanding victory over the best juveniles that could be mustered against her, and it means she stands alone among the two-year-olds which have started this year. There was a tremendous crowd out for the first Saturday of the meeting, and seldom has there been a more attractive program. The Aberdeen Stakes had a brilliant setting and it was a great day of sport. Twenty went to the post for the Aberdeen Stakes, and much trouble was experienced in finding room for such a number at the barrier. It was inevitable that there should be crowding, but the start was good. When the barrier was released Club Steak left from the inside position, but Dignus, the J. A. Buchanan starter, and Red Rocket were both a bit more alert in getting under way. At the end of the first eighth it was apparent Club Steak could go to the leaders without much effort, but Chalmers was content to restrain her and permit her to race along back of them as she held the others safe. . J~*l~ Chalmers »* 1 — — . 1_ took her to the outside of the leaders and she raced past them into a good lead. Then Chalmers took hold of her again and at the end she was three lengths in advance. Red Pocket hung on well after she had raced Dignus into submission and was two lengths before A. P. Canale when the Miami performer finished resolutely to take third. Dignus was fourth and two lengths before The Heathen, another which had raced at Miami. The others were strung out, but the H. P. Whitney pair. Witchery and Miniator had outside positions at the barrier and did not have fair racing chance. Tt was a great day for H. G. Bedwells silks when Cudgeller was home winner of the mile and seventy yards fifth race. His other winners were Foreland and Senator Norris. SINGLE FOOT AGAIN BEATEN. The fifth brought another defeat to J. K. Griffiths Single Foot, but the son of Wrack and Virginia P., ran the best race he has shown this year. He was only beaten in the last strides. Iounger had much to do with the defeat of Single Foot. He went along with the Griffith champion to the head of the stretch, while Cudgeller dropped out of contention and was rated along by W. Smith who made no effort to go after the leaders. It was not until after leaving the back stretch, that Cudgeller began to move up. Single Foot was not able to race lounger into defeat until turning into the stretch and by that time, while he hung on gamely, he could not withstand the final rush of Cudgeller. Lounger tired badly in the final eighth and Opperman got up to beat him for third. Bedstone, the other starter, after showing early speed also quit badly. Fifteen ordinary platers made up the field for the opening dash and it resulted in a good contest when II. G. Bedwells Foreland got up in time to beat Lord Baltimore II. with Tempest the one to save third from Kindred. There was a long delay at the barrier but the start was good and Lord Baltimore II. at once went to the front. Muskallonge had left well but his was an outside position and he quickly dropped back after the first eighth Foreland was well up but Tempest, on the inside, ran into early trouble and Callahan could not find racing room. Callahan held to the inside position until nearing the stretch turn where he swung to the outside, but Lord Baltimore II. hung on better than usual and Foreland had to be hard ridden to beat him home. In the meantime Tempest was racing faster than either, and but for the early interference would probably have been the winner. T0YLAND A SURPRISE. Starter Milton had trouble with the sprinters starting in the three-quarters mile second race before he could align them to his liking. Then he effected a good start. The result was something of a surprise when Toyland. the colt Steve Judge raced for It. O. Egan at Tijuana, was winner from H. P. Whitneys Traffic, while Chocolate Soldier saved third place from Harvey Sted-man. Chocolate Soldier and Dizzy Blondo set most of the pace and before the stretch was reached Dizzy Blonde was showing in front. She was still a close contender turn- Oontinued on sixteenth pnge 9 CLUB STEAK VICTRESS Continued from first pace ing for home, but she tired before the eighth I ost was reached and Fields eased her up and she finished last. Traffic had been racing forwardly and as Dizzy Blonde tired he showed in front, but Toyland came with a rush and readily disposed of the Whitney filly in the last eighth. Traffic saved second place from Chocolate Soldier, while Walter J. Salmons Adria finished fourth. Centrifugal left a bit slowly in this race, but could not get to the front and cut no figure in the running. As for Dizzy Blonde, it was apparent she was not in the form she displayed at Miami and when she tired Fields did not persevere with her. In a program of holiday quality one of the good offerings was the Kclipse Purse, a three-quarters mile condition race which attracted a high class field. This proved rather easy for H. G. Bedwells Senator Norris. which has been thoroughly prepared by his racing at Bowie and in the Harford Handicap here. H. P. Whitneys Backbone, making his first start of the y»ar, raced into second place, with J. Fred Adams J. Fred A. beating Foxhall Keenes Topboot for third. General Thatcher, recently shipped here from Tijuana, was fifth with Gay Comet, the only other starter, beaten off. Senator Norris was away fast and Field* after permitting him to take a safe lead rated him along in front of his opponents and he was at no time seriously threatened and won , y two lengths. Packbone was going exceedingly well at the end and out-gamed J. Fred A. in the final sixteenth. As for Topboot, he ran into early trouble and Chalmers was forced to take him to the outside on the far turn. The son of Amadis and Puss in Boots ran fairly well, but J. Fred A. at all times held him safe It would seem that Senator Norris is a bit better this year than last and he had the advantage of racing. The race run by Backbone was decidedly impressive for he but recently arrived from Mr. Whitneys farm and is sure to improve greatly over this, his first race of the year. Golden Billows was an easy winner of the sixth race. Smith rode a patient race on her. He permitted Pyron to go to the front and show the way for half a mile but when ready he sent Golden Billows to the front and rounding the far turn, the mare drew away into an easy lead. At the end she beat Kdward Gray by a couple of lengths. Dr. OMara after dropping back rounding the first turn finished with a rush in the stretch on the outside and just managed to get up in time to beat Lucifer by a nose for third place.
