AURORA, 111.. April 28.— The St. Charles Claiming Handicap at a mile and seventy yards, fifth on the program at Exposition Park this afternoon, served as the leading attraction and was productive of a stirring and interesting contest. There were but five starters, of which Mrs. L. Glovers Cameo proved best, having command over four opponents at all stages and accomplishing a comparatively easy success over Captain Ponan and Pat Calhoun, with Battle On and Try Again, the other two starters, bringing up the rear. Jockey J. Majestic had the mount on the winner and gave an excellent riding exhibition, such as he is capable of when given a good horse under him. Cameo, a former member of the J. N. Camden Stable, was taken into the lead at once and, under Majestics hustling tactics, was rated along in the lead all the way and had enough left to take care of Captain Ponan all during the last three-sixteenths, when the latter made several resolute, but unsuccessful, attempts to take the lead. J. L. Ledouxs Pat Calhoun, heavily supported, labored along considerable distance from the leaders throughout, being unable to get up at any stage, swerving under punishment in the final drive and finally having the better of a stiff argument with Battle On, for the place. The latter was a prominent factor the first three-quarters, but failed badly when the final drive came. Battle On ruled favorite over Pat Calhoun by a slight margin. Conditions most favorable for the sport again prevailed and a remarkably large attendance was on hand to witness the weekday offering. An enjoyable afternoon was in store for the patrons when favorites performed with fair success in most instances. ANOTHER FOR RISHEE. Winning easily from Zoya, Sheffield and nine other ordinary ones, the Lone Star Stables Rushee, accounted for her second purse of the meeting in taking the measure of her opponents in the opening dash. Rushee, well ridden by jockey M. Hum, took command at the start and made every post a winning one and had something in reserve at the finish. Three lengths back of the winner came Zoya. landing comfortably in advance of Sheffield to take second place. Sheffields race was one of her best, as this filly overcame some serious interference to finish gaining on the leaders at the end. Rushee was well supported, while there was considerable attention for Zoya also and they hav- ing the better of the contest here proved popular with the spectators. Realist made it two wins in as many starts for himself when he just lasted to b -at Fore Lady a head in a driving finish, which terminated the running of the second rac t Fore Lady was home a length in advance of Private Seth for second place. The winner ruled a strongly backed favorite, making it two in a row for the followers of form. Betty Elvira flattered with a show of early speed. which carried her along in the lead for the first five-eighths, but tired and gave way fast when challenged, finishing fourth.. Fore Lady met with some crowding in the early stages and could not race at her b-st until the stretch was reached, otherwise the Bed-well color-carrier would probably have reversed the decision with Realist. MISS DKAPEAT iRADI ATES. Miss Drapeau graduated into the winning class with a victory over the band of twelve youngsters which started in the third race at four and a half furlongs. Bill Seth chal- h-nged the winner in the last seventy yards and just missed getting up. taking second place easily. Clem Lewis was the one to account for the minor award. The bulky field of twelve which started over this short distance caused much crowding and inter-i ference on the turns and many of the starters were prevented from racing to their best form making the winners success of the lucky variety. The third favorite to win during the afters noon scored in the fourth race, when B. Creechs Beauty Star earned the first purse of the meeting for that stable. Hngadine was second, outstaying Far Over in the last seventy yards, while Far Over just managed to nose out Clique for third place. Beauty Star followed the course of the majority of the winners here and came from behind in the stretch to accomplish her victory. An accident occurred during the running of the race, when Boi Confidence, after ha ing led to the lower turn and while still racing in a prominent position among the leaders. became alarmed over a small dog running across the track, causing him to swerve sud- denly and he was seen to stumble and fall _______________.__ .out iimcd on eighteenth paje.j CAMEO AND MAJESTIC , Contim:r l from first pns M heavily.
