SCAPA FLOW DISAPPOINTS 1 Finishes Third in His Initial Start as Three-Year-Old. * iopngan ami Rip Ilap Lead Him Home in Salisbury Purs? — ranter Takes Fleetwood Handicap. HAW DE GRACE, Md.. April 2S— Wal- I t r M. Jeffords Man o War colt Sea pa Flow, one of the choices for the Kentucky Derby, made his first start of the season in the Salisbury Purse at Havre de Grace this afternoon and finished third, beaten off a length and a half by Jopagan ;md Hip Rap. Seapa Flow got the best of the start and drew away into a two lengths lead in the run to the first turn. Coltiletti then took hold of him, rating him along under slight restraint. At the half-mile post ODonnell sent Rip Rap up to the leader and they raced in close order until straightened out in the home stretch. At the eighth post Coltiletti hit Scapa Flow with his whip and the big son of Man o War ducked into the inside fence. Coltiletti had to take him up and this put him out of the struggle. In the final eighth Peternel sent Jopagan up and, wearing Rip Rap down, outlasted him to win by the shortest of margins. There was an excuse for Rip Rap being beaten, for when the start came he stumbled and wenl to his knees. Had he broken free and clear with the leaders the result would probably have been reversed. The mile and seventy yards were run in 1 :43%, the fractional time being :23, :47% 1:12%. and 1:38%. COLTILETTP8 UNLFfKT DAT. This was an unlucky day for Coltiletti. He had the mount on Prince of Wales, favorite for the Fleetwood Handicap, and lost a race he should have won. Prince of Wales was off poorly, moved up stoutly on the inside only to be blocked at the turn out of the backstretch. He was then taken wide and, at the finish, was wearing Canter down to be beaten by a scant half length. The imported racer Rolls Royce, set a fast page in this event, with Canter laying close up. Rounding the far turn the latter moved up strongly and, when once in front, he remained there. John IiOwo sent his first winner to the post for his new employer. Samuel Ross, when the Washington turfmans Pennant — Broom-flower filly. Flower Girl, won the opening race, a dash of four and a half furlongs for maiden two-year-old fillies. A fieM of thirteen faced the barrier and several of them were bad actors. Starter Milton sent them away to a good start and Flower Girl quickly assumed command. She held the others safe all the way. although tiring a bit at the last sixteenth. At the finish she had a margin of half a length over Pink Lily, the latter finishing fast and beating Suky by a head for second place. A big band of platers went to the post in the second race, fifteen facing the barrier. A strong play developed on Cnswept and he was a well back favorite at post time. Kddie Riekenbacher was th" most fancied of the others. When the start came Miss Fayette and Red Light were quickest to begin and they raced in this order heads apart until the far turn, where the latter took the lead. Mergler had Miss Fayette under restraint and when he called on her, entering the home stretch, the filly drew away into a three 1 •ngth lead, which she retained to the end. Poor Sport, after beginning: last, worked his way up on the outside and, in a driving finish, beat Inswept by a length and a half fur second place. Kddie Riekenbacher was never a dangerous factor. FOUKHF..VH A FAILURE Forehead was made the medium of a plunge in the third race and he went to the i ost on odds-on-favorite. Forehead, ridden by R. Workman, was fractious at the p.St and when the start came got away slowly on the extreme outside. He was bothered ■MM at the first turn, but on the back- | stretch gradually improved his position. Entering the home stretch he slipped through next to the inner rail and got on almost equal terms with the leader at the eighth post. He tired, however, and in the final drive Keydet kept his head in front to win by that margin. Keydet took the lead on the backstretch and ODonnell rated him under slight restraint to the home stretch. When called on Keydet hung on with splendid courage. Foundation was a tiring third. The Harry Payne Whtiney Stable furnished the winner of the fourth race in Fresco, a brown filly by Peter Pan — Paint Brush. It was her first start of the year and she made g»»d in handy fashion, coming from behind in the stretch to defeat Fantastic by half a length. The latter began very slowly and had a lot taken out f her going to the front and racing Dignus into submission. 1 ignus was third, b -aten off three lengths for se.oiid place.
