MURZ1N CAPTURES RENNERT ji 1 Gets Up in Final Strides of a Spectacular Finish ♦ Wednesdays Entertainment at Pimlieo Track Replete With Exciting and Interesting Racing— Double for W. J. Salmon. ♦ PIMLICO. Md.. May 4. Coming from last place at the head of the stretch. W. J. Salmons three-year-old Murzim got up in the final strides of a thrilling finish to win the fourth renewal of the Uennert -Handicap at Pimlieo today. This race, for three-year-olds, ,000 added, over three-quarters of a mile, brought out a field of nine. There were two stable entries — Sir Harry and Wan-dering Minstrel, racing for the Seagram Stable, and Candy May and Candy Pig. for : H. T. Archibald. Public support was divided between them. Wandering V.t.nstrel caused I a delay of four minutes at the post and when the barrier was released he was off In front. Peter Fiz, showing a great flight of early speed, soon caught and passed him and, after assuming an easy lead, was taken in | hand and held command. He was still in front entering the home stretch, where he appeared to have a safe lead under restraint. In the meantime Murzim. beginning very slowly, was a trailer, and looked to be hopelessly out of it. Maiben was sitting still, putting up one of his famous chilly rides. Not until straightened out for the final run did he make an effort, and when he let Murzim down, the latter began nil i wing down the leaders, closing with a great burst of speed that landed him in front in the very last stride. It was the closest kind of a finish, one of the sort that left the winner in doubt until the official placing was displayed. The Heathen was third, beaten by :i length for second place. The winners portion of the purse was ,740. Trainer T. J. Healey appears to have a mortgage on this stake, for in the five runnings he has saddled the winner on three different occasions. R. T. Wilsons Tall Timber won in 1923, and the same owners Senalado captured the stake in 1925. SPARKLING DUEL. Tt was a mighty close fight between Royal Pennant and Inquisitor in the opening race. The finish was such as to lead the backers of each horse to think that they won. The Whitney colt, however, got the decision by the smallest possible margin. He was a bit slow to begin and in the early stages was outrun. Prom the top of the stretch to the finish he gained steadily and in a whirlwind finish just managed to get up in I time. Inquisitor ran a smashing good race himself. He began slowly, but moved up rapidly on the outside and, entering the home stretch, went wide. He disposed of pacemaker Mini wood at this point and drew away at the eighth post only to tire when it I came to the front drive. Pink Lily was third beaten by five lengths. The heavily backed Allfey furnished a thrill in the second race when he beat Dexter by a head. Beginning well she immediately dropped out of it and Craigmile did not hurry her any. When she got her stride Allfey moved up on the outside and went to the leaders with a rush after passing the half-mile post only to be blocked. Craigmile again elected to take the outside route and was soon on even terms with Dexter. The pair raced like a team all the last three-eighths and at the finish the Kilmer entry proved the gamer of the two. Allfey is a loose, long-striding lop-eared filly and when stiaightened out covers a lot of ground. She runs as though she fancies going a long route and will no doubt prove a useful racing tool. She is the first winner that Henry McDaniH sent to the past for V. S. Kilmer since taking over his band this spring. ANOTHER FOR BE I WELL. It appears as if Bedwell has finally struck his stride. He gathered in another purse this afternoon, when Fore Star won the third race. It marked his second win of the meeting. Johnny Jewell began like ■ winner. He took command at the turn into the back stretch but. passing the half-mile post. Fore Star and Powder both passed him. These two raced head and head rounding the far turn and into the home stretch, with Fore Star always having a slight advantage. In the last sixteenth the Bedwell racer shook off opposition and. at the end, won going away by half a length. The Salmon Stable made it a double when Thuron came back, after Murzims victory, to win the fifth race. Maiben left the post with a rush, and Thuron raced into a long lead. He hugged the rail, but in the run through the home stretch was inclined to quit, ami Mail en got busy on him the last hundred yards. At the finish Thuron had a four-h-ngth lead. The next three were noses and heads apart. Th- winner ran the four and a half furlongs in S4, the fastest for the distance run at the meeting.
