CANTERS TO VICTORY » . Balboa Easily Takes Batavia Handicap Under Restraint. ♦ Carom Finishes Third — Cold Wind Fails to Keep Race Fans Away From Exposition Park. • AURORA, 111.. May 4.— The Batavia Handicap, with a purse of ,400, at one mile, for three-year-olds and over, was the main attraction offered at Exposition Park this afternoon. The Gentilly Stables five-year-old gelding Balboa easily accounted for the race and won* eased up from five others. Magic Wand, racing in good form, took second place, while J. A. Parsons Carom was third. Balboa raced under restraint most of the way. his rider giving him his head only for a short period after making the turn into the stretch, during which time Balboa quickly passed Golden Mac, Black On White and Magic Wand, and drew into the lead an eighth from the finish. With the race safe. Dellow, astride Balboa, took the gelding under restraint again and got to the finish winner by a length and a half, easing upv Magic Wand led for most of the way. showed good speed and, after disposing of Golden Mac, drew into a good lead. However, when Balboa challenged, Magic Wand was no match for him and had to be content with saving second place. The tiring Black On White and Golden Mac were easy victims for Carom when the latter finishtd with a burst of speed which carried him into third place near the end. A cold wind swept the course and spacious grandstand this afternoon and warm wraps were appropriate and a comfort to the large crowd which had gathered to witness proceedings, while the track was much improved. With *an absence of any further moisture, the track should be in its best condition soon. ■HUUU1 SCORES Ml UK Strite and Valentines Worthman became a double winner at the meeting when he took the measure of a large band of cheap ones, which tried conclusions in the opening race. The winner was outrun to the stretch, but racing gamely, worked his way toward the leaders gradually and, free of interference, rushed up in the last twenty yards to win drawing clear. Old Broadway raced well, being in a contending position from the start and was best of the others. Hands tp ran a likely race, coming from the rear also in the last three-sixteenths and. finishing fast, was running over horses at the end, winding up third. Adventuress also made it two in a row for herself when she led her rivals all the way in the next race, and chalked up another victory for O. L. Foster and jockey C. E. Allen. Who Knows Me gave an improved performance and finished second, while Rocking was the one to take the minor award. The eventual winner was taken, into the lead by her bustling rider in the first quarter and, well ridden, held sway to near the end easily. Who Knows Me reached her flanks and was gaining steadily, but the winner was too good for him and held her advantage to win by a neck. Rocking was always in close pursuit of the leader but could never get up, having to be content with third. FORK LADY FAIL! RK. Another favorite fell by the wayside when Fore Lady, heavily backed, met a decisive defeat in the third raee. .. P. McNeils Bronx was returned winner from Bob Spalding. Happy Top and the nine others. Happy Top showed the most early speed, closely pressed by Climax and Fore Lady. Climax retired, after going a half mile, and Fore Lady challenged the leader. She gained a slight lead, corning on the inside in the stretch, but was not good enough, giving way readily when Bronx challenged strongly inside the last eighth. Bob Spalding, also, easily passed the tiring leader to take second, while Happy Top, holding on evenly in the final drive, put Fore Iidy away and out-finished My Valet for third place. A long delay at the post occurred before the start of the fourth race caused by the bad actions of Kingscourt II. He kicked the favorite. Tormentor, twice and starter Mor-risey had to come down from the starters stand and examine the latter when the colt ran to the rear of the barrier holding his left hind leg off the ground. Morrissey examined the limb and then permitted the colt to be galloped along and when nothing serious seemed to be the matter he was brought hack into the barrier and the start was made. Tormentor showed no ill effects and after keeping up with the leaders all the way went to the outside in the stretch and drew clear at the end into a length lead over Tom P. to take the purse. Tom P. flattered with the most speed and showed in front to the stretch where he proved no match for the winner. l-rcva finished third. .Continued ou MXtL-cuth pige : I | CANTERS TO VICTORY Continued from first page The secondary feature, an allowance race for three-year-olds and upward and fifth on the card, was won by the Dearborn Stables three-year-old filly Chaff. Best Friend was always best for second place racing in that position virtually from the start while Pee Wee, which formerly raced as Blabbermouth and was attached to the Idle Hour Farm Stable, was third. Supporter led briefly in the first quarter, then Chaff took command and assumed an easy lead, which enabled her to come to the finish two lengths to the good over her nearest rival and apparently with plenty of speed in reserve. Best Friend forced a good pace and was never in danger of losing second place. Pee Wee kept in near pursuit of the leaders also and was easily third. The W. S. Kilmer colors were seen on the track for the first time at the meeting when Sun Fairy represented that stable in this race. One of the latest stables at Exposition Park is that under the care of R. Ethington, including Buzzer, Hurry Scurry and Lady | j W., owned by P. C. James, Jr., and J. P. j Welch, and also Hop Town Belle, owned by J. W. Harwood. Buzzer and Hurry Scurry-joined the other pair here Tuesday, having been shipped from Winter quarters at Bloom-ington. 111. 1 ♦
