FRENCH-BRED HORSES WIN Finish One-Two-Three in Chester Cup — Dark Japan First by a Wide Margin. SPECIAL CABLEGRAM. LONDON, England, May 4. — French-bred horses were overwhelmingly successful in the Chester Cup, a handicap at two miles and a quarter, today. Dark Japan, carrying 123 pounds and ridden by Smirke, won with ridiculous ease. Bamboula. under Donoghue and at ION pounds, was second, while Dark Hillock, 123 pounds, Thwaits riding, beat Poet, 104 pounds, Marland up, for third. There were sixteen starters. The race was run in a thunderstorm, which broke just before the start, and made it difficult for the big crowd to distinguish the colors. It was the first rain in three weeks. Dark Japan reached the finish line fifteen lengths in advance of Bamboula, which beat Dark Hillock four lengths. Dark Japan was the joint favorite with Temple Stone, which was outdistanced. Each was held at 4 to 1. Bamboula was 15 to 1 and Dark Hillock 20 to 1. Each of the first three horses was bred in France. Dark Japan and Dark Hillock are by Dark legend, whose dam is a half-sister to the great American sire Fair Play.
