OUTSIDER TRIUMPHS . o Veneita M. Carries Meiner Colors to Victory at Lexington. 0 Hinata Stakes Falls to Daughter of Captain Alcock — Meriwick Defeats Good Band. LEXINGTON, Ky., May 2.— The renewal of the Hinata Stakes, for two-year-old fillies, which featured todays program at the Kentucky Association course, resulted in a surprise when Veneita M., owned by Mrs. H. A. Meiner of Cincinnati, beat Gallaher and Combs Polly Burnside, the favorite, by a nose for the winners prize of ,410. N. H. Johnsona Well Turned was third, with Helen Dean, Frances Milward, Starry Heavens, Peggy Mac, Fanchion and Black Pet following to the end ot the four and a half furlongs in the order named. Veneita M. was accorded an exceedingly well judged and strong ride by Frank Chia-vetta and while she succeeded Polly Burn-side in the lead an eighth from the finish, all Chiavettas skill was required to have her retain just enough margin to earn the judges verdict. She followed in nearest pursuit of Polly Burnsides pace from the outset and when called upon responded with speed and courage that proved just a trifle too much for the almost equally swift and game favorite. Well Turned also raced along prominently from the start and, continuing gamely after reaching the stretch, steadily reduced the distance that separated her from the leaders. She was beaten three lengths for second place, which reflected her inability to seriously threaten the more successful pair. Starry Heavens, which prevailed as second choice, raced disappointingly and was unable to obtain a forward place at any juncture. Black Bet, which raced coupled with Frances Milward. ruined whatever chances she might have had by bolting on the first turn. RECEIVES HANDSOME TliOPHY. Veneita M. is a daughter of Captain Al-cock-Lily Trayne and was a winner during the New Orleans meeting. She ran the distance in :54Vs, which marked a good performance over the fast track. In addition to first money Mrs. Meiner received a handsome silver plate donated by Mrs. Clarence Le Bus, mistress of Hinata Farm. The stake was supported by seven other races and the entire program was decided under ideal conditions and before the largest mid-week crowd in several years. Favorites were vanquished with regularity, the beaten ones including several that were backed at prohibitive odds. Toanna, which had confident backing, started a new season with a victory when he easily accounted for the opening race. He led throughout, with Doctor Fred following in second place and Benedict Vow third. The latter and Wrong Number, which raced in poor fashion, were others that won extensive support. The winner was ridden by D. Connelly. Racing in his best form Meriwick sprinted to victory after a drive with lied Grange. The winners success was in the nature of a surprise yet well-earned, as he outstayed Red Grange in a long drive after having been in close early pursuit. Sandy Hatch, which finished in third place, carried the hopes of no small number of patrons, but had no excuse in failing to race with better effect. Fireproof and Cpdike were unable to menace the leaders at any time. RAYON A GRADE ATE. C. M. Smiths four-year-old Rayon, ridden by D. Connelly, was graduated from the maiden division when he proved best among the seven non-winners in the fourth race. The winner outran the others almost from the start and reached the end with a margin of two lengths over Spot Light, which was easily second over Pretty Run. The winner shared favoritism with Galloping Dawn and Pretty Run. Despite poor riding. Just Beau succeeded in winning from Punkie, Xcellenza and four other cheap platers in the third race. S. Bond, an apprentice, had the mount on the winner and while he got him to the finish with a head to spare over Punkie, the gelding raced as if more skilfull riding would have permitted him to race to a decisive victory. The field was one of the poorest brought together here in a long time.
