UNEXPECTED RESULT o Orestes II. Furnishes Upset in Ac- ; counting for Geneva Handicap. o Favorite Hot Time Finishes Third With Anaconda Separating Pair — Bumper Attendance. 0 AURORA, 111.. May 2. — Orestes II., racing for Miss M. Kelly, furnished an outstanding upset today at Aurora when he accounted for the Geneva Handicap, featuring the program, and winning handily from Anaconda, another outsider. Hot Time finished in third place. The race was at five and a half furlongs and brought to the post eight accredited speedy ones including Conquistador, which was supported extensively, but favoritism was accorded Hot Time. Conquistador developed mean post traits and it required considerable effort of two assistant starters to keep him partially tractable. When the start came, after an eight minute delay, Conquistador was away poorly, whereas Hot Time and Anaconda were away forwardly. Anaconda was forced back when Conquistaor, with a high flight of speed, came across the track and moved into the lead. He continued to show the way, with Hot Time in close pursuit and seemingly under slight restraint. Orestes II., during the early running, was well up and when the leaders began showing signs of tiring, the pace dwindling surprisingly in the last quarter, he made a dete--mined bid when straightened for the stretch run and easily overhauled Hot Time and Conquistador and was prepared for the challenge of Anaconda, which had closed a big gap after overcoming interference. Orestes II. ultimately won by a half length, with Anaconda a good margin before Hot Time, which in turn beat the California non-stayer for third place. The others were never formidable. Seventeen Sixty being a distant follower, mainly due to Noels action in taking his mount completely out of the running. Considerable surprise was manifested over the slow time made in the race when 1 :08 was recorded for the distance. It had previously been negotiated by Senator Seth in 1:06?3. IDEAL /FATHER CONDITIONS. The summerlike weather which again prevailed was responsible for another record attendance and sharp betting activity. The sport was of a wholesome variety, the winners being forced to their utmost to otustay the contenders. The winners were fairly well supported in most instances, the main surprise coming with the victory of Orestes II. The two-year-old race enabled Royal Ruby, the favored one, to register a success over Bouncing Ball after the latter had displayed a keen flight of speed. Peggy Lee finished in third place. Bouncing Ball and Peggy Lee were pacemakers in the early stages, but both were allowed to swerve repeatedly under incompetent handling and this contributed to the success of Royal Ruby. The locally owned Sturdy Stella began proceedings with a victory when she finished in advance of up o Tea after a spirited drive that landed her half a length in front. Secrecy brought up in third place. The race attracted twelve platers to engage over the three-quarters distance and Sturdy Stella had the weight of support installing her an outstanding favorite. She dominated in front after disposing of Supporter, but Cup o Tea made it interesting for her all during the final eighth and the favorite was under severe pressure near the end. EASY FOR SENATOR SETIL The Jones Stock Farm Stable made an auspicious debut for the year when its Senator Seth, an" overwhelming favorite, was home an easy victor over the speedy non-staying American Thunder, with Seth"s Romance in third place. The winner overhauled American Thunder when his rider elected and he had a big margin to spare at the finish. American Thunder displayed his customary high flight of early speed, but after going half a mile he readily gave way to Senator Seth and he had to lie urged hard to stand off Seths Romance for second place. Miss Torch was regarded as a factor before the race, but Noel, for no apparent reason, took her completely out of it soon after the start and she was always far out of it thereafter. Heed was luckiest in the mile race that brought to the post a dozen platers. Heed led for the entire distance and outstayed the fast finishing Open Hand, which had to overcome some poor racing luck in the early stages. John J. S. finished in third place. Those in the wake of IJeed raced closely grouped for a considerable portion of the race. The showing of Street Liz, favorite in the sixth race, was a subject of unfavorable comment Ht-r performance was in striking contract to some previously winning ones. She was almost a furlong away from the leaders in the early stages and was never a serious factor at any stage. The race was Continued ou twentieth pace. UNEXPECTED RESULT Continued from first page. won by Clapper, a strongly backed one. which led for the entire distance and beat the outsider Jim Dahlman, Dunbeatli taking third place. The final race found Tom Byrne a handy winner after having led for the entire distance. Quick Asset finished in second place, and Bird Behave was in advance of the others. There was no perceptible change in the order of the early running and the finish. Clique, which was expected to figure prominently in the race, showed a particularly dull effort and finished beaten off. He served as the medium for claiming Tom Byrne at a cost of ,000 to Mrs. W. J. Hayes.
