NEWMARKET, England, May 2.— The Two Thousand Guineas, the one mile turf classic for three-year-olds, was won here today by Sir Laurence Philipp.s Flamingo, a bay colt by Flamboyant — Lady Peregrine. Beasley wore the silks of Captain Gough. Patrick Beasley was up on OCurry while Weston donned the black jacket and white cap of Lord Derby. The finish was a thriller and the winner demonstrated his gameness and stamina in coming from behind the pace. Sunny Trace cut out the running for the first three-quarters. Flamingo, accompanied by Royal Minstrel, closed in on Sunny Trace at that point. Royal Minstrel, whose wind is slightly affected, led for a few strides and then gave way to Flamingo. They raced as a team to the last hundred yards where Flamingo got his head in front and kept it there to the finish. The duel bet.. een Flamingo and Royal Minstrel carried them out from the field. OCurry finished a length and a half back of them with Pharamond close to him. The winners time was 1:38%, one-fifth of a second slower than Adams Apples winning time last year. The weather was perfect for the renewal of the classic. The sun shone from a cloudless sky. The going was good. The crowd was larger than the average, and among the spectators was King George. Flamingo was the second choice in the betting, being held at 5 to 1. Royal Minstrel was the favorite at 7 to 2. OCurry was 33 to 1.
