FEATURE RACE TO MI VIDA • — . Cassidy Colorbearer Wins by Three Lengths From Gerard. * _ Rancocas Stables Mel Eoo Vindicates Confident Backing in Second Race — Weather Improves. NEW YORK, N. Y.. June 8.— It was an excellent day of racing that was offered by the Westchester Racing Association at Belmont Park today, although there was as much interest in the running of the Belmont Stakes and the National Stallion Stakes, to be decided tomorrow afternoon. The best offering of the day was the Camp-fire Handicap, of seven-eighths, and it was Dr. T. M. Cassidys Mi Vida that was winner from George D. Wideners Gerard, with J. S. Cosdens Snobbish saving third from E. M. Byers Taras Hall. The day was an excellent one for the sport, with summer-like weather and a trac-k that had improved considerably. This resulted in a big crowd being on hand. In the Campfire Handicap, Snobbish was first to show from a good start, with Cloudy close at hand and Mi Vida in third place. Gerard was slow to be under way and he was far back of the leaders and not showing his usual alertness. Fator seemed to be well satisfied with the position of Mi Vida and had the colt under slight restraint. Snobbish and Cloudy continued to show the way to the head of the stretch, but there Fator made his first move and he was soon on even terms with them. A few strides further and he had taken command, but Taras Hall had come into the contention with a rush and there was a general closing up before the last »eighth post was reached. By thi3 time Gerard was beginning to run for McAtee and it looked as though he was sure to run into trouble on the inside. Through that last eighth Mi Vida gradually drew away until at the end he was three lengths clear. Snobbish was hanging on gamely, but Gerard, after McAtee had taken him from the rail to the outer position, came with a rush. It was only in the last strides that he dropped his nose down in front of Snobbish to take second place. Taras Hall was fourth and was well lapped on the filly. BRUSH IX LAST STRIDE. Platers came together in the opening race, at a mile, and it resulted in a good finish when Johnny Callahan had Archibald Bark-lies Brush up in the last stride to beat home Edward Arlingtons Friedjof Nansen, and H. H. Goodwins Manwell raced into third place. Torpointer and Manwell were the ones to force the early pace, but Friedjof Nansen was not far away and at the head of the stretch he went into command. In the meantime Callahan was moving up smoothly with Brush and an eighth out he had become a menace. Friedjof Nansen was hanging on well and Callahan had to ride his best to have the filly drop her nose down in front. Friedjof Nansen was two lengths before Manwell and he in turn was only a head before Harass. There was a nose finish came out of the mile of the third race when W. Ziegler, Jr.s Wee Burn, showing startlingly improved form, way just up to- beat home W. Martina Balko. The Rosedale Stables Caroler was third, easily beating Alans Bay for the short end of the purse. Caroler was the one to set the pace and he made it hot, while Callahan rated Balko along back of him and within striking distance. Soult was racing third and High Star followed him, while Wee Burn was further back and Garner was waiting patiently with him. It was at the turn into the stretch that Caroler began to tire and. as Callahan drew up on him with Balko, Lindseth went to the whip in a vain effort to hold to his lead. Soult had dropped back beaten, but Wee Burn was working his way up gallantly. At the last sixteenth post Wee Burn was-r-lose after Balko and in the drive to the finish proved to have more left, to be winner in the last stride. Balko was a length and a half before the tired Caroler and Alans Bay was four lengths further back. Bystander, one that had been showing good form recently, ran a dull race and was never a contender. RANCOCAS COLORS TO FORE. The Rancocas Stables Mei Foo, under a hustling ride from L. Fator, was winner of the second race of the day, which was for two-year-olds through the Widener course. Mei Foo showed the way to Red Bank, from the Greentree Stable, while George D. Wideners Mill Hand was third. The winner was a forward factor all the way and through the final eighth stood off determined opposition from Red Bank. The latter moved up when called upon, but after getting to the leader faltered at the end. Mill Hand showed a good effort and was an easy third. The mile and a quarter for platers that was the fifth saw C. L. Carrolls Athel the winner from William Martins Festic. which just beat home E. At. Byers Social Mug for that part of the purse. Athel was at all times maste-r of the situation when Bejshak took him into the command at the rise of the barrier. Workman sent Fair Man out after the winner and the pair of them drew out from the others. As the stretch was reached Fair Man dropped back and Schreiner moved with Social Mug and for an instance he threatened, but Athel took care of his rush sturdily and held the lead. — «
