I Majority of Kentucky Derby Candidates in Slow Gallops ♦ Jacques Stables Essare Works One Mile and a Quarter Over Trying Course in 2:12 3-5 — H. J. Thompsons Appendix Removed ♦ LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 16. — But for Essare, the candidate of the Jacques Stable, which John Johnson sent through his final distance work over a slow track this morning, the near score of likely starters for Saturdays renewal of the Kentucky Derby, today were given only light workouts. For a majority, gallops of about one mile each were their assignment while others were only walked. Tomorrow morning will witness a number of the candidates in short speed trials and following that nothing further will be asked of them prior to Saturdays race. Essare.. one of the real outsiders in the race, showed up fairly well in his final long work, which was over the Derby course of one and one-quarter miles, and in which he was timed in 2:12%. He worked over a very trying course and, under an impost, estimated to equal the 126 pounds he must carry Saturday. I The colt went into the trial with good speed, but under restraint. He ran the first quarter in :24*£ ; half mile in :495 and three-quarters in 1:16*4. Running the fourth quarter in :27%, he finished a mile in 1 :44, and while he was urged in the final stages of the fourth quarter, the time for the one mile was the fastest of the morning. While negotiating the final quarter of the Derby course, the colt was hard ridden and he was almost fully extended in going the quarter in :28%, completing the one and one-quarter miles in 2:12%. C. E. Durnell, trainer of the Three Ds Stock Farm horses, reported that Calf Roper and Panchio came out of their races Wednesday in good condition and they probably will carry the stables colors Saturday. Durnell, however, has not entirely given up consideration of Prince Pat and Double Heart and it is not unlikely that one of the latter may start. Durnell will await track conditions for the race before deciding as to his starters. The serious illness of H. J. Thompson, trainer of E. R. Bradleys Blue Larkspur and Bay Beauty, who last night underwent an operation for the removal of his appendix, caused perceptible uneasiness about the Bradley stable this morning. Thompson was unable to get to the track yesterday to attend his morning duties and later in the day was found to be suffering from appendicitis and an immediate operation was decided upon. The patient was hastily removed from his apartment in a local hotel to an infirmary, where the operation was performed by Dr. Irvin Abell. Although there was a gangrenous infection of the appendix, Dr. Abell said the patient withstood the operation well. The surgeon also is of the opinion that the operation will prove successful, although it may require another twenty-four hours to correctly determine his condition. Blue Larkspur and Bay Beauty are be- Continued on sixteenth page. The preparation of the Derby horses will be under the direction of Wm. Hurley, trainer of the western division of Mr. Bradleys stable, Barry Shannon, manager of Mr. Bradleys racing interests, and the several capable assistants to Thompson, who have been in the stables employ for some years. As jockey Willie Fronk will be required to ride H. P. Headleys Paraphrase in Saturdays race, the Bradley stable this morning took a call on the services of Karl Horvath and the latter probably will be astride Bay Beauty in the Derby. Previously it was the stables intention to ride Fronk on Bay Beauty. Mack Garner, who is to ride Blue Larkspur, and his nephew, Willie Garner, who will have the Derby mount on Mrs. Graham Fair Van-derbilts Chicatie, are due here Friday night from New York. J. J. Coughlins Karl Eitel and John R. Thompson Jr.s Minotaur, which figured in impressive trials Wednesday afternoon, were reported in fine condition this morning. They are positive starters. Charles Graffagnini, who sold Minotaur to Mr. Thompson just a short time before last Fridays renewal, of the Preakness Stakes, arrived this morning from Baltimore. Graffagnini is satisfied that Minotaur is the outstanding threat and he anticipates a victory for him Saturday. A victory for the colt in the local fixture, or in fact, any race with a winning value of 5,000 before the close of the present year, will net Graffagnini 5,000 additional, such being one of the conditions of the colts transfer. B. B. Jones, who maintains the Audley Farm and whose The Choctaw is a scheduled starter if a favorable track prevails, is due to arrive here tomorrow. Mr. Jones is bringing a large party from Washington, Virginia and New York. Edward Cebrian, another prominent owner and breeder keenly interested in the outcome of the fixture, arrived from California yesterday. Mr. Cebrian bred Naishapur, the intended starter of Chaffee Earl, also of California, who purchased the three-year-old from his breeder in time to win the Tijuana Derby. Mr. Earl has been here for the past several days and this morning, through John McKee, his trainer, he acquired the two-year-old Jim Dandy from W. Dudley. The youngster raced in Mr. Earls interests this afternoon. ♦
